Hello everyone, I have a rather specific question about retrofitting my Ikea Metod kitchen: How can I install soft-close functionality on Ikea Metod drawers afterwards?

A few months ago, I bought Metod drawers without soft-close, and now I want to know how to add the appropriate hinges or dampers without having to replace the entire drawer front or cabinet box. Are there special soft-close mechanisms that can be easily installed? Do you need any special tools or are there particular steps to keep in mind?

I have heard that some soft-close components are integrated into the drawer runners, but the identical runners without soft-close can also be swapped out. Who has experience with this and can offer tips or a step-by-step guide?

The Metod drawers have the soft-close function integrated into the drawer slides. This means you need to replace the existing slides with ones that include soft-close. The only tool you need is a screwdriver. Pull out the drawer, remove the screws, replace the slides, and put the drawer back in.

To retrofit the soft-close function on Ikea Metod drawers, replacing the drawer slides is necessary because the dampers are integrated into the slides and cannot be installed separately.

It is important to purchase the exact soft-close drawer slides compatible with your drawer type (e.g., full extension, width). Tools required are minimal: a Phillips screwdriver and possibly a hammer for light adjustments. Installation can be done without removing the drawer front, as the slides are mounted on the outside of the cabinet carcass.

The following steps are recommended:
- Fully remove the drawer
- Unscrew the old slides from the cabinet carcass
- Attach the new soft-close slides to the cabinet carcass
- Insert the drawer and check the adjustment

If any adjustments are needed, they will be indicated in the instructions; otherwise, the slides should fit precisely.

For clarification: There are two types of Metod drawer runners, one with soft-close and one without. Retrofitting requires a complete replacement because the dampers are mechanically integrated into the runners.

So you need to replace the existing runners with ones that have soft-close.

This means that other retrofit options, such as attaching individual dampers to the drawer sides, will not achieve the desired result. Additionally, I recommend checking the serial number or model before purchasing the runners, as Ikea often offers small variations.

A small tip: If the drawer fronts can be removed, it makes installation easier, but it is not absolutely necessary.

I had the same problem and initially wanted to install individual dampers because I thought it would be easier. After several attempts, I followed the experts’ advice here and used complete drawer slides with integrated soft-close mechanisms.

It took some effort to fully remove the drawers and reinstall them, but the result is great—no more banging when closing, and everything operates very smoothly.

I can confirm that; it helped me a lot, especially when working alone.

Exactly, removing the front panel and drawer makes the work easier, but it’s not necessary. The drawer slides are attached to the cabinet body, so they still need to be unscrewed. A Phillips screwdriver is enough for the job; no additional tools are required.
