Hello everyone, a few months ago I assembled my IKEA Metod kitchen and overall, I’m satisfied. However, the drawers don’t have a soft-close function, which has become quite bothersome because the drawers slam loudly and sometimes forcefully.

My question is: How can I retrofit IKEA Metod drawers with soft-close mechanisms?

I’d like to know exactly which parts I need, whether they are easy to install without having to remove the fronts extensively, if there are different types of soft-close systems that are compatible, and what I should pay attention to when upgrading, especially regarding load capacity and long-term durability.

If anyone has experience with this retrofit, I would really appreciate tips, a photo guide, or at least a step-by-step explanation. Thanks in advance!

It is important to proceed carefully during the renovation and avoid misaligning the dampers.

This is a crucial point. Soft-close dampers work optimally only when they are precisely aligned in their guides. Additionally, it should be noted that the dampers usually rely on a spring mechanism. If the drawer front is too heavy, the system can become overloaded, leading to a reduction in performance.

If particularly heavy fronts are installed, it may be necessary to choose alternative dampers with higher load capacity or to reinforce the construction. Although this is uncommon with IKEA Metod, it can be relevant for custom modifications.

I can fully understand how annoying loud drawers can be. In my case, the old Metod drawers without soft-close were really frustrating. Retrofitting soft-close took some effort to get started, but it is definitely worth it.

At first, I was unsure if I was doing it correctly. This forum helped me a lot – combined with a careful approach during the renovation. Remember: patience and careful handling are more important than rushing the work.

So: don’t get discouraged. We can do this!

In addition to the previous posts, here are a few tips for retrofitting the soft-close function on IKEA Metod drawers:

- Be sure to have the IKEA assembly instructions for the dampers on hand when installing. These are available as a PDF on the IKEA website.
- The dampers mainly come in two types: standard soft-close and those designed for larger or heavier drawers, such as for the oven compartment.
- Before starting the modification, check the depth of your drawers, as there are different damper lengths.
- After installation, you may need to slightly adjust the drawer front since the damper causes the closing to slow down a bit.
- Working with a second person makes inserting the drawers much easier.

In summary: With the right preparation and tools, the modification is straightforward.

Exactly! Calmness and keeping an overview are essential. I would like to add: If you notice that the soft-close dampers don’t engage properly, be sure to check whether the plastic clips on the sliding mechanism are damaged or bent.

This often happens when too much force is applied in the wrong place. Also, check the screws on the drawer and the rails before installation, as loose or improperly fitted screws can cause problems with closing later on.

With correct installation, you don’t even need to remove the front panel on Metod cabinets. Good luck with your project!
