Hello everyone, I hope you can help me. I want to replace the drawer hinges on my IKEA Malm dressers because some of them are a bit loose and no longer operate smoothly.

Specifically, I am looking for instructions on how to remove these hinges and which replacement parts fit best.

Are there any special tools I absolutely need, and what is the best way to proceed without damaging the drawer?

If anyone has experience with purchasing original parts or alternatives, I would also appreciate tips regarding quality and compatibility.

Thanks in advance for your support!

I experienced the same issue! Honestly, it’s not always easy, especially if the hinges have been installed for a while and have settled. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was doing everything correctly – that held me back a bit, but with patience, it’s manageable.

For removal: Usually, you can take the drawer out completely, then unscrew the hinges. You should be careful, though, especially if the drawer is fully loaded, because sometimes it feels like everything might fall apart if you’re not careful.

I ordered original replacement parts from IKEA at the time; they fit perfectly and are good quality. I tried alternatives, but some were too short or poorly made.

What length are your hinges? Are they side-mounted or under-mount hinges? If you’re not sure, I’m happy to help!

First, completely remove the drawer. Loosen the screws of the hinges. Then remove the hinge. Purchase the original part and install it in reverse order. No special tools are required.

I strongly recommend using the original hinges from IKEA. The Malm drawers have a standardized mounting system that alternative parts often do not fit exactly. This can lead to malfunctions and reduced lifespan.

Regarding tools: A Phillips screwdriver of the appropriate size is usually sufficient. Sometimes a small flathead screwdriver helps to release clips, if present.

For removal:

1. Completely pull the drawer out by pulling it all the way forward and then lifting it at a certain point or—depending on the model—releasing a lock.
2. Loosen the screws on the hinges at the drawer front and on the drawer slides.
3. Carefully remove the hinge.

Hinges may vary, so avoid using force and check if a cover cap needs to be removed.

If you have questions about the exact model, just give a brief description again.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the Malm chest of drawers with 3 drawers; the hinges are mounted on the inside of the sides, made of metal, about 28 cm long (11 inches), if I measured correctly. They seem to be side-mounted hinges.

I’m not sure exactly where to lift or unlock the drawer; is there a direction or special clips for this?

Also, can you tell me if the hinges are sometimes hidden or screwed in on the side panel (the cabinet body)?

I don’t want to take any risks damaging anything since the chest of drawers is new. 🙂

For my Malm drawers, you usually have to pull the drawer fully out until it stops. Then, there are typically small plastic clips on the left and right under the drawer edge. Gently press or push these outwards to lift the drawer off the runners.

And can you also say if the hinges are sometimes hidden or screwed in depth (on the cabinet element)?

The hinges are usually visible, screwed on the inner side at the side. Each hinge has 2-3 screws.

It is very important to check all screws after removal and replace any that are loose.

I was personally surprised how easy removal is once you know the clips.
