Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Ikea Malm dressers, specifically with the drawer slides. Over the years, they have worn out, causing the drawers not to run smoothly and sometimes stick or even come completely off the tracks.
My question is: How do I properly replace the drawer slides on Malm drawers? I mean the side metal or plastic rails that are attached to both the dresser and the drawer, allowing for smooth pulling.
What tools do I need, do I have to remove the drawer entirely? And are there differences depending on the Malm model year? I want to carry out the replacement as precisely as possible without damaging the dresser or the drawer.
I would really appreciate a step-by-step guide or any tips!

Hello Fope52,
you formulated your question very clearly, which makes the process easier! Replacing the drawer slides on Malm drawers is not that difficult if you proceed systematically.
In general, you will need a Phillips screwdriver, possibly a flathead screwdriver, and some patience. First, you have to pull the drawer completely out of the dresser. To do this, pull the drawer out as far as possible and then lift it slightly so the slides disengage from the track.
The drawer slides are usually screwed to the side of the drawer. On newer Malm models, these are typically metal slides with plastic rollers, while older ones often have simple plastic slides. You can recognize them by the fact that they are either firmly screwed in or sometimes only hooked in.
Here I recommend being very careful when removing the slides, especially if the screws are a bit stuck. After removing the old slides, you can attach the new ones. Make sure the slides are positioned exactly at the same height so the drawer will run smoothly afterward.
If you don’t have the original replacement parts, there are compatible drawer slides from third-party suppliers available.
If you want, I can also provide you with a brief step-by-step guide later. If you have any questions along the way, feel free to ask!

First, you need to pull the drawer completely out of the dresser.Exactly, pull the drawer all the way out, release the side clips or levers (depending on the model year), unscrew the old runners, screw in the new ones, and put the drawer back in. Done.
Tools: Phillips screwdriver, possibly a flathead screwdriver.
Hello everyone,
I’m adding a few details about replacing the runners in Malm drawers.
Malm models usually come with either metal telescopic slides or plastic runners. The metal telescopic slides generally operate more smoothly and are more durable, and they are less likely to be damaged during improper removal.
Here is my suggestion for a clean replacement:
1. Fully extend the drawer and carefully lift it to detach it.
2. Remove the runner attached to the drawer using a screwdriver. Some models have small plastic clips on the underside that can be gently pried off.
3. Unscrew the old runner from the dresser as well.
4. Obtain new runners with exact measurements – you can find the originals on the Ikea website or by using the serial number, or choose compatible replacement parts from a furniture accessories supplier.
5. Mount the new runners cleanly and precisely in the exact same position to avoid any misalignment.
6. Reinsert the drawer and check that it functions smoothly.
Tip: If you notice that the slide sticks at one end when pushing the drawer back in, check the alignment using a spirit level.
And don’t worry, you probably already have some experience from other furniture projects – it will work out! 🙂 If you want, I can also share a link to a suitable spare parts list.

Make sure the rails are installed at exactly the same height so the drawer runs smoothly later on.This is indeed the most important point. Even a slight tilt will cause the drawer to stick or run unevenly.
I also recommend checking the mounting points before installing the new slides. Sometimes the screw holes in the wood are worn out or slightly damaged. It may be necessary to reinforce them with wood glue or dowels to ensure a secure hold.
For older Malm drawers, it's also important to note that some slide rails are no longer available from Ikea as replacement parts. In that case, an alternative from a specialist supplier might be better. These replacement systems are often even more durable.
In short: precision when fixing, suitable replacement parts, and care of the mounting points are crucial for success.
