Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Malm bed, and I noticed that one of the wooden slats on the headboard has come loose and the veneer is peeling off in places. I want to repair the headboard so that it is stable again and looks neat, but I don’t want the repair to be too complicated and would like to preserve the appearance as much as possible. Does anyone have experience repairing a Malm headboard, especially with loose wood and damaged veneer? What steps and materials would you recommend for a durable and visually appealing repair? I look forward to any tips or instructions.

A little patience works wonders here. Exactly! For the veneer, you can also use special repair kits that conceal small scratches or chipped areas. These often combine wax or furniture markers and are very easy to apply. If a larger part of the veneer has come off, you might consider carefully sanding it down and repainting it. It’s a bit more work, but the appearance improves significantly.

If you want, I can also give you some tips on color matching. I can only agree with Kinbu, especially if you don’t get the wood color exactly right—a repair marker can give you the final touch. Just a little joke on the side: a headboard won’t look better if you add a coffee stain, even if the sharp contrast is tempting ;-)
Jokes aside, be careful when sanding, or you might end up with a completely new surface. With a bit of luck, you still have some of the original color as a reference.
If the wooden strips are completely broken, you can join them using small wooden dowels. Get a drill and dowels of the appropriate size, insert several dowels, apply wood glue, and clamp them together. This holds much better than just using wood glue over large areas. If the headboard is otherwise just loose, sometimes simply tightening the existing screws can significantly improve stability.
