I have noticed some scratches on my IKEA Metod countertop that have often occurred during kitchen use. Since I don’t want to replace the countertop immediately and feel confident doing a DIY repair, I would like to know the best way to fix these scratches myself.
Which materials or repair kits are recommended? I am specifically asking about proven methods for the melamine-coated surfaces of the Metod countertops, as I understand that ordinary wood filler or paint is not suitable here.
I am also interested in any preparation steps I should definitely follow to ensure the repair is as inconspicuous as possible and that the surface remains durable afterwards.
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello Lionelmin,
First of all, your question is very well asked and clearly addresses the key points! That’s great, especially since the surface of IKEA Metod countertops is quite unique.
Regarding the scratches: Since these countertops are often coated with melamine, I would recommend starting by gently rounding off the damaged area with a fine sanding pad to avoid any sharp edges. After that, there are repair kits for melamine available, which contain fillers that you can apply with a small spatula. These kits are usually available at hardware stores – they typically include a filler that bonds well with melamine and can be easily overpainted.
It’s important that you:
- Thoroughly clean the surface beforehand (without any residue)
- Avoid using solvents that could damage the coating
- After repairing, carefully sand the filled area and, if needed, seal it with a repair paint that matches the color of the countertop.
Does anyone else have experience with specific products that work particularly well on these countertops?

I once had similar scratches on my Metod countertop. My trick was to first carefully cover the scratches with a wax stick in a matching color to visually reduce their depth. Then I gently rubbed over them with a fine sanding pad and applied a matte clear coat. Now it looks almost like new.
Sometimes it’s the small steps that make a big difference. Good luck!

Which materials or kits are recommended? I am specifically asking about proven approaches for the melamine-coated surfaces of the Metod countertops, as I know you can’t simply use ordinary wood filler or paint here.I would like to briefly point out a critical note: it is often assumed that scratches on melamine countertops can be fully repaired, but the coating and the substrate behave completely differently compared to solid wood.
- Melamine is very brittle and quickly becomes dull or matte when sanded.
- Fillers and wax sticks usually only provide a visual cover-up and are not a true long-term solution.
- Repair paints do not always adhere permanently, especially when the surface is heavily used.
Therefore, it is worth considering whether a DIY repair is economically sensible – sometimes it is better to conceal a damaged area with a cover plate or a custom-made addition.
If a repair is still carried out, I recommend a precise color match above all, and to strictly follow the instructions when applying fillers.
I’m curious to see which other methods will be discussed here.
