Hello everyone, I have a question regarding the repair of scratch-resistant kitchen cabinet fronts from the Ikea Metod system. Specifically, it concerns some fine to medium scratches that have appeared through everyday use. Ikea often uses a special melamine coating that is supposed to be quite durable, but if the surface does get damaged, I’m wondering what the best approach is to fix scratches without having to replace the fronts entirely. Are there effective home remedies or professional repair kits that work for this? And if so, what is the proper procedure to treat the scratches without affecting the surface texture or the color tone? I have already tried thoroughly cleaning with polish and sponges, but the scratches remain visible. I would really appreciate tips based on experience, including which methods to avoid so it doesn’t get worse. Thanks in advance!

For melamine surfaces, you can try using fine sandpaper (1200 grit or finer) and some furniture polish. Avoid rubbing too hard. Afterwards, buff with a microfiber cloth.

Hello fuklo5, your question is very well formulated and shows that you have already given some thought to the material. Ikea Metod fronts with a melamine coating are indeed quite durable, but the scratch-resistant surface has its limits, especially with sharp or deeper scratches. I am happy to explain a detailed procedure for how you can proceed:

- First, you should thoroughly clean the surface, ideally with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Make sure to remove all grease and dirt residues, otherwise the result will be uneven.

- To sand out fine scratches, very fine sandpaper or sanding pads are commonly used (starting at 1200 grit and above). It is important to always sand in the direction of the grain or texture – for smooth melamine fronts, rather circular motions but carefully.

- For deeper scratches, I recommend using repair kits specifically designed for melamine, which often contain wax or synthetic resin-based fillers. These fill the scratches and can be sanded and polished after drying.

- Avoid aggressive polishing agents or coarse sandpaper, as these can damage the protective layer.

- Finally, you should use a polish suitable for melamine to restore the gloss and surface hardness.

One more question: Are the scratches mainly superficial, or do they go deeper into the coating? That would influence the choice of method.

Most of the scratches are primarily superficial, visible but not very deep. A few seem a bit deeper and can be lightly felt with a fingernail. The surface is matte, rather smooth. It seems to me, as you say, that the melamine coating is slightly scratched but not completely penetrated.

Would you also recommend that for the deeper areas, or is it better to use the repair kit then? Is there a difference in the result or at least in the durability of the repair?

fuklo5’s assessment is correct: For superficial scratches, very fine sandpaper (1500 grit or finer) is often sufficient, used with very careful, even motions to avoid damaging the shine.

For noticeable, deeper scratches, a repair kit should definitely be used. These usually contain fillers, often wax- or resin-based, which are applied to the scratches and can be sanded and polished after drying. The result is much more durable and barely noticeable.

It is important for both methods to properly treat the repaired area afterward with a suitable polish or sealant to help the surface regain its scratch-resistant properties as much as possible.

Sanding alone without filling deep scratches often leads to visible damage and a weaker surface, because material is removed but the gap is not closed.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide to repairing scratches on scratch-resistant Ikea Metod kitchen fronts:

- Cleaning: First, clean the surface with a mild detergent and warm water. Let it dry.
- Sanding: If the scratches are very fine, use 1500 grit sandpaper or a fine sanding pad. Gently work the surface in circular motions.
- Filler: For deeper scratches, use a special melamine repair wax or a repair kit containing wax or resin. Apply a thin layer and allow it to dry completely.
- Finishing: Carefully remove any excess material with fine sandpaper.
- Polishing: Finally, apply polish to smooth and protect the surface.

Important: Always test first in an inconspicuous area to see how the material reacts. Never use coarse abrasives, as these can permanently damage the surface.
