Hello everyone, I have an important question regarding the care and repair of Malm dressers, especially when they suffer damage from improper use or minor accidents. I’m particularly interested in how to properly and sustainably repair the most common types of damage—such as surface scratches, loose veneer, or small chips on the edges—without causing unsightly stains or color mismatches later on. Which products, tools, and techniques would you recommend to carry out such repairs as professionally as possible? I have already tried touching up scratches with wax sticks, but the results were only moderate. I would also appreciate tips on surface preparation and aftercare to keep the dresser looking good for as long as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I agree with Pome60: repairs are really not that complicated! Additionally, if you have a spot that has darkened significantly, a lightly diluted wood stain or a dark felt-tip pen can help even out the color before sealing with wax or varnish.

Make sure to apply the stain very sparingly to avoid unsightly edges.

If anyone needs tips on the best staining products, feel free to ask! I’ve already tried quite a few 🙂

I like to use a matte water-based clear coat for post-treatment – it provides good protection and doesn’t add any gloss if you don’t want it. Great for everyday furniture!

Colored pencil or a special wax—the better solution

Thanks to everyone for the great tips! I will work with colored pencils and wax, and I also have glue on hand. The only remaining question is whether to sand smaller scratches—I think I’ll hold off on that for now and follow the advice of Pome60 and benonon to proceed carefully.

Does anyone have experience with whether repair waxes should be polished after application, or if that might damage the surface?

Yes, I recommend gently polishing with a soft cloth after the wax has cured. This helps to remove any excess material and ensures the color blends smoothly with the surrounding area. It is important not to polish too aggressively to avoid damaging the edges of the repair.

Also: use a lint-free cotton or microfiber cloth whenever possible. This will give a nice, even shine and leave the surface feeling smooth.

Good luck with your repair!
