I have a problem with the doors on my Ikea Hemnes wardrobe not closing properly anymore. The door hinges feel a bit stiff when pressing, and sometimes the door catches on the edge of the wardrobe, causing it to either hang too far out or not close flush. My question is how I can repair the Hemnes doors so that they latch correctly and close smoothly again, without having to replace all the hinges or carry out major carpentry work. Are there simple methods to properly adjust the doors or make minor repairs? I have already tried readjusting the screws on the hinges, but that hasn’t had the desired effect so far. Maybe someone here has experience with this exact model and can offer tips on how to get the doors fully functional again – advice on the right tools or possible spare parts would also be welcome. Thanks!
The cause of doors not closing properly in Hemnes furniture is usually due to incorrect adjustment and material fatigue of the fasteners. Systematic analysis:
- Check all hinges for mechanical damage and proper function.
- Inspect hinge screws for tightness; refasten or replace any loose or worn anchor points.
- Align doors using the three-dimensional adjustment options of the cam hinges.
- Wood geometry: Any tolerance deviation in the frame or carcass can cause problems.
To secure worn screw holes, it is advisable to use wood filler or replace them with metal threaded inserts. This increases stability.
It is recommended to thoroughly document the current condition before and after adjustments to ensure long-lasting repairs.

If the wood is soft, pre-drill the holes slightly before fully tightening the screws to prevent the wood from splitting. Thanks for the tip, I didn’t know that. The wood at the edges of the Hemnes doors is somewhat soft. So far, I’ve been screwing in the screws without pre-drilling – makes sense why the holes sometimes look “widened.”

Apply wood glue into the screw hole, then insert the screw and let it dry; this helps the screw hold better again. I will try this method for loose holes as well; it seems like an elegant solution.
So, I will first take the doors off, clean the hinges, then check the screws and replace or secure them if necessary, and finally adjust in the order of lateral position, depth, and height.
If I still encounter problems after the adjustment, I will take a closer look to see if the wood has warped or if the cabinet frame itself is crooked. Many thanks for the very helpful contributions so far!
