Hello everyone, I have noticed some small dents in my Malm furniture from IKEA, caused by bumps or pressure marks from everyday use. My question is: How can I properly repair these dents with minimal visible damage? I am looking for a method that can be done by amateurs with some basic DIY skills. It is important to me that the surface is not damaged and that replacing entire parts is avoided if possible. Does anyone have experience repairing dents in wooden furniture, especially the veneered or laminated surfaces of the Malm series? I would really appreciate specific tips, including any tools and steps involved.
Hello, the easiest method is often to dampen the dents with a moist cloth and then carefully apply heat from underneath using an iron. The combination of heat and moisture causes the wood to swell slightly, raising the dent. Important: Do not use too high a temperature and check constantly.

Heat and humidity cause the wood to swell slightlyThe method RIDAN describes works well in principle if the furniture is made of solid wood. However, Malm furniture is usually veneered or covered with a thin coating, which can complicate things. Direct and overly hot ironing on the surface can damage the veneered or coated finish and cause unsightly discoloration or damage.
A more detailed procedure helps here:
1. Moistening: Place a clean, damp cotton or linen cloth over the dent.
2. Ironing at low temperature: Set the iron to a low setting (preferably a steam iron without steam) and move it constantly over the cloth, never staying too long in one spot.
3. Check step-by-step: After about 10–20 seconds, lift the iron and check whether the dent has raised.
4. Repeat: If necessary, repeat the process. Patience is key.
For painted surfaces, I recommend testing first in an inconspicuous area.
Alternatively, there are special repair kits with fillers and wax crayons for minor dents, which can better preserve the gloss and color of the surface.
Is there more detailed information about the coating of your furniture? That would be important to give suitable advice.
Oh, this topic is really interesting! 🙂 I once had similar issues with my Malm drawers and managed to make the dents almost invisible!
My advice: It’s best to use an iron, but always place a clean, damp cloth in between. This protects the surface, and the heat causes the wood to slightly contract. This worked wonderfully for me!
And don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work immediately – practice makes perfect! 🙂
Also, if the dent isn’t too deep, you can use repair wax – there are special ones for wooden furniture available in various shades, so you can match the color well. It’s really great for hiding small holes and dents!
Give it a try and let me know how it went! 🙂)
