Hello everyone,
I have some dented edges on my BILLY shelf that are likely caused by impacts or pressure. Since the edges are made of veneered wood, the surface is unfortunately prone to dents or distortions. I’m interested in how to effectively and as permanently as possible repair these dented edges. Are there recommended methods to restore or fill the wood without significantly affecting its appearance? Also, which tools or aids would be best suited for this? I would also appreciate any advice on how to prevent such damage in the future. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Are there proven methods to straighten or fill damaged wood without significantly affecting the appearance? That’s exactly the key point. Honestly, BILLY shelves are rather inexpensive furniture pieces – sometimes I wonder if it’s more cost-effective to completely replace the damaged edge or even buy a new shelf, instead of spending hours on repairs. Using veneer patches, filler, or wood glue will probably never achieve a result as good as the original.
However, if sentimental value is high, it’s worth trying: sunken dents can sometimes be raised again using a steam method. You just need a damp cloth and an iron – but be careful not to use too much heat, or you might have to repaint the entire shelf.
Still, I would argue that the effort often doesn’t justify the result; these shelves are mass-produced, and more often than not, buying new is the more practical option. ;-)

Visible dents can sometimes be raised again using a steam method. That’s true, the steam method is a well-established first step for repairing compressed edges. You moisten the affected area with a damp cloth and gently heat it with an iron. The water causes the wood to swell and can raise the dent slightly.
It’s important that the surface has no varnish damage, because with veneer you cannot completely remove the moisture, and the swelling may cause visible changes. If the dent is very deep, you can carefully fill it afterwards with color-matched wood filler and sand it smooth. This leads to a less noticeable result.
I also recommend touching up slight color differences with matte furniture wax or a color-matched furniture marker.

Quick and effective.Absolutely! And honestly, the BILLY shelf is like a trusty friend in daily life—it can take a few hits, no worries, you can fix it!
I tried the steam method myself and only had to do minimal touch-ups afterward. A little wood filler and a coat of furniture wax brought the edge back to life visually.
And if the shelf still shows some marks despite your care, just cover them up with some nice decorative items—cleverly hidden, and the shelf stays an eye-catcher 🙂
So, be brave and smooth it out! 😉
