Hello everyone, I have some surfaces on my Ikea Brimnes furniture that have small scratches and some chipping from normal use. The carcass panels are melamine-coated and have a fairly smooth, white surface. My question is how to best repair these damaged areas without causing an irregular or visibly altered finish. Are there specific repair materials recommended for melamine resin-coated surfaces on Ikea furniture like Brimnes? Which tools and steps are advisable to achieve the most inconspicuous and durable repair? I have considered filler, touch-up pens, or special repair kits but am unsure which material fits best and how to apply it to preserve the surface texture. Thanks for your experiences and advice!

Hello karsi, thank you for your detailed and precise question! With melamine-coated surfaces like those on Ikea Brimnes, the main issue is that they are very smooth and hard. Small scratches can often be fixed quite well with special repair pens available at furniture stores, which are color-matched to white or the corresponding decoration. For deeper damage or chipped areas, I recommend the following procedure:

- Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the damaged area with a mild detergent and let it dry completely, so that no grease or dirt residues interfere with adhesion.
- Filler/putty: Use a plastic or wooden spatula and a suitable filler. For melamine, special furniture repair fillers are advisable, with which you fill the chips and then sand smoothly. Be careful when sanding to avoid damaging the surrounding melamine surface.
- Paint pen: Afterwards, it is recommended to use a paint pen or repair wax that matches the surface color exactly to avoid color differences.
- Care: Once dry, you can polish the area with a soft cloth.

Make sure that the repair materials are specifically suitable for melamine, as otherwise hairline cracks or discoloration may occur. I recommend testing on an inconspicuous spot first to check if the color tone and texture match. Additionally, some hardware stores and furniture outlets offer repair kits specifically for Ikea furniture. Hope this helps you!

Filling compounds and touch-up markers from furniture repair kits are the standard. Clean the surface beforehand and lightly sand the area.

For precise repair of melamine-coated surfaces like those on Brimnes furniture, a multi-step approach is recommended:

- The damaged area must first be free of grease and dust. Cleaning with isopropanol or denatured alcohol works best.
- Chips can be filled using a special wood or furniture filler based on polyurethane or acrylic. These adhere well to the smooth surface without causing reactions.
- After drying, if necessary, carefully smooth the area with fine sandpaper (400–600 grit) to avoid damaging adjacent areas.
- The color should be retouched using a solvent-based repair marker matched to the Brimnes white. Since manufacturers do not always provide exact color codes, testing a color mix beforehand is advisable.
- Finally, applying a lacquer or sealing varnish based on acrylic paint helps protect the repaired area against moisture and wear.

From my experience, commercially available furniture repair kits specifically designed for melamine-hard surfaces are the most effective. Important note: Avoid aggressive abrasives or rough treatment, as the melamine coating cannot be refinished and any damage will remain visible.

I had a similar problem with my Brimnes TV cabinet. At first, I was hesitant to repair the damage myself because I was afraid of making it worse. What helped me was working very carefully with fine sandpaper and testing every product first on an inconspicuous area.

I can only agree with that. I have a small tip: if the damage covers a larger area, using a thin adhesive tape or film in a matching color to cover the spot can be an option. Sometimes that looks even better than a poor repair. Of course, this is more of a temporary solution.

I understand that it can be intimidating to try this for the first time. But building up the repair slowly and using a small amount of material often helps, and it can even be a bit enjoyable to restore the piece of furniture.

A small additional tip regarding the materials used: If you use paint markers, make sure they are solvent-based rather than water-based, as they adhere better and are more durable.

It is also important to gently smooth the repaired area after it dries with very fine sandpaper and then treat it with a special furniture wax or polish. This helps achieve a surface texture similar to the original.

This is especially relevant for Ikea furniture, as they often have very smooth melamine surfaces that can otherwise become stained or rough quickly.
