Hello everyone,

some time ago I installed a kitchen with IKEA Metod cabinets, and by now some of the cabinet doors are damaged – among other things, there are scratches on the edges and small chips on the surface. I would like to know how to properly repair these damaged doors without having to replace them completely.

I am mainly looking for a method that restores the appearance while ensuring stability. I have seen that some people use repair kits or special paints, but I am not sure which approach makes sense for the mostly laminated or painted surfaces of the Metod doors.

Does anyone have experience with fixing scratches or chipped areas on IKEA Metod fronts? Which materials are suitable, and what are common mistakes to avoid?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hey fogokla!

You can definitely handle this! 😊 With Metod cabinet doors, the most important thing at first is to prepare the damage well: lightly sand the edges and chipped areas so there are no loose parts left. Then, a special repair putty for wood or plastic often helps – there are great kits specifically for furniture repairs!

It’s important to apply the putty in several thin layers, letting each layer dry thoroughly. Afterwards, sand very finely to achieve a smooth surface. Finally, you can use matching furniture markers or paints to blend the surface color. I think it’s really enjoyable, and the damage becomes barely noticeable!

Don’t get discouraged; it’s a matter of practice, but it works great. If you want product recommendations, I’m happy to share some! So, get started on those doors and good luck!!! 👍

Hello fogokla,

to answer your question with a structured guide, here is a brief procedure for repairing damaged IKEA Metod cabinet doors:

- First, carefully clean the damaged area and remove any dust.
- Then, gently smooth the damaged edges or chipped spots using fine sandpaper (grit 240 or finer) to ensure there are no uneven surfaces.
- Next, use wood- or plastic-based filler or repair putty, depending on the type of door front. For Metod doors, which are often laminated, I recommend flexible repair compounds that are less likely to crack.
- Apply the filler thinly, remove excess with a putty knife, and allow it to dry thoroughly (follow the manufacturer’s instructions).
- After drying, sand the area again with very fine sandpaper (grit 400 or higher) until smooth.
- Finally, color-match the repaired spot: furniture markers or special paints work well, ideally with the same color code as the door or at least a close match.

Common mistakes:
- Applying the filler too thickly, leading to uneven edges later.
- Not allowing it to dry properly before sanding.
- Not matching the color precisely — always test first.

Summary: Patience is key; otherwise, the repair will be noticeable. I hope this helps you!

- Not allowing sufficient drying time before sanding.

These tips are very important. I would add that it is also crucial to critically assess whether a repair is truly beneficial in the long term. Especially with Melod doors that have a foil coating, repairs can remain visible and may be prone to damage again sooner if the surface is not restored authentically.

Therefore, if the doors are heavily used or if the damage affects load-bearing edges, it may be better to consider replacing the door. Attempting a repair makes sense for minor cosmetic issues but is not always a durable solution.

If you decide to proceed with a repair, also make sure the products used are tested for adhesion on foil surfaces – many wood repair materials are not suitable for foil.

A clear strategy and detailed product information can help avoid wrong decisions here.
