Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question: How can I repair damaged drawers in my Ikea Besta system myself, without replacing the entire drawer? In my model, the side panels are partly swollen, and the drawer slides stick, making opening and closing much more difficult. I would like to know which tools and materials are useful, how to proceed without compromising stability, and if there are common weak points to watch out for. Does anyone have experience with this or maybe a step-by-step guide? Thanks in advance!

If you’re new to furniture repairs: Don’t worry, fixing a drawer from the Besta series yourself is definitely doable. The most important thing is to carefully remove the drawer first and keep all screws and fittings safe so nothing gets lost. When sanding down the swollen wood, make sure the surface is smooth before you apply the filler. Good preparation helps avoid frustration: Read the instructions for the materials you’re using, such as wood filler and adhesive. If you have any questions about the tools, just ask—we’re happy to help!

Drawer slides can often be replaced without much effort. If the side panel is severely damaged, reinforce it from the inside with wooden battens. Glue is useful for small cracks, while filler is better for larger holes.

Thank you for the initial responses! I find the comment about the material composition and the use of synthetic resin wood filler particularly interesting. In my case, the surface has swollen but has not completely broken through. How long should I ideally let the filler dry to regain the necessary stability? Is there anything else I should consider when choosing the guide rails, as I have the impression that the drawer always sticks a little when closing?

It depends on the product, but for the wood filler I used, at least 6 to 8 hours were needed, and 24 hours is better for full strength. It’s important to allow enough time and not to rush. Regarding guide rails, my advice is to use the original replacement rails from Ikea, as their dimensions fit exactly. Also, always make sure the rails are clean and dust-free, as sticking can sometimes be caused by dirt.

Here is a technical tip: Check the alignment of the slides. Often, the drawer is not mounted perfectly parallel to the slides, which causes friction. A close inspection of the screws and a slight adjustment of the slides can solve the problem. Additionally, I recommend using a lubricant (silicone spray) to make the movement smoother. The sticking sensation often results not only from wear but also from simple misalignment.

Great to see the thread gaining so much momentum! Repairing instead of throwing away is definitely the best approach. 🙂 I really like it when, with a bit of patience and the right techniques, damaged drawers can be turned back into fully functional furniture! So keep at it—no damage is so bad that it can’t be improved! Over time, you’ll become more confident. Good luck to everyone who is getting started!
