Hello everyone,

I have some Ikea Platsa wooden furniture pieces that have developed some unsightly damage. Specifically, there are minor scratches, chipped corners, and in some places, slightly swollen wood. Since the PLATSA series has a rather special surface treatment, I am unsure how to best repair these wooden parts without the repair spots being clearly visible afterward or damaging the surface. Does anyone have experience with repairing damage specifically on Ikea PLATSA furniture?

I am interested in suitable materials (wood filler, paints, waxes, etc.) as well as helpful repair methods. I especially want the result to be durable and visually consistent. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Basically, you should first determine how deep the damage is. Minor scratches can be fairly well concealed with special wood filler pens or color-matched waxes, but chipped corners usually require stabilization and filling with wood putty before repainting.

However, I wonder if Ikea uses some kind of surface sealant on PLATSA that regular wood paint might not adequately cover. Have you checked that?

You shouldn’t just use any product without understanding how the surface is constructed. Otherwise, the result may be uneven or won’t last long. What have you tried so far to fix the damage? Or why haven’t you tried anything yet?

Thanks for the hint! Actually, I haven’t found any specific information about whether PLATSA uses a special sealant. The wooden parts feel more like painted MDF or particleboard, and the surface appears smooth and somewhat glossy.

So far, I have only lightly treated a small spot with fine sandpaper and considered using wax, but I lack suitable recommendations to avoid damaging or staining the surface.

I want to repair the furniture as close to the original as possible and have no experience with painting or finishing the PLATSA wooden parts. Does anyone have tips on suitable types of paint or care products for cleaning and repair?

For professional repair of Ikea PLATSA wood parts, the following procedure is recommended:

- First, clean the surface with a mild cleaner suitable for painted surfaces (no alcohol or strong solvents).
- For minor scratches, wax sticks or wood repair kits matched to the wood color are suitable.
- For chipped areas, use wood filler, which should be finely sanded after it has fully dried.
- Important: Since the PLATSA surface usually has a thin layer of paint or melamine coating, use water-based acrylic paint for overcoating, as it adheres well and dries with a low gloss.
- Before larger repairs, test on inconspicuous areas.

This approach works well for a durable and visually consistent repair that closely matches the original PLATSA surface.

I recommend the following procedure:

- Fine sanding
- Filling with wood filler
- Fine sanding again
- Applying a water-based acrylic varnish as a topcoat
- Wax as a finish

This works well with PLATSA.

Great question! I had the exact same issues with my PLATSA shelves 😊. My tip: buy a wood repair marker that matches the color closely to cover small scratches. For bigger damages, I used wood filler and then matched the surface with matte acrylic paint. This way, nothing looks patchy and it almost looks like new! Patience is key—make sure to let everything dry thoroughly.

Good luck! You can do it!!
