Hello everyone, I have unfortunately noticed several chipped edges on my IKEA BESTÅ furniture, especially in areas that are frequently used or bumped. Since the furniture consists of a carcass and front made of coated wood, I wonder: What is the best way to repair these chipped edges myself so that the damage is as invisible as possible and the surface is well protected afterward? I understand that special repair kits or paints should probably be used for this, but I would appreciate tips on suitable materials, tools, and a clear step-by-step guide. If anyone knows of a permanent solution, I would be glad to hear about it!

Repair wax or special furniture touch-up sticks in the matching color work best. First, clean the damaged areas, then apply the wax or stick and smooth it out. Finally, protect with a clear varnish, and you’re done.

That is basically correct, but I would like to explain in more detail. For chipped edges on BESTÅ furniture, I recommend the following procedure:

- First, carefully smooth the damaged area with fine sandpaper (grain 220-320) to remove loose particles.
- Then wipe off any dust with a damp cloth and allow it to dry thoroughly.
- Repair wax (also available as furniture repair putty) should match the furniture color exactly. Alternatively, IKEA or hardware stores offer suitable furniture markers. These are especially suitable for small to medium chips.
- Use a small spatula or the included tool to gently press the wax into the gap. Remove excess immediately.
- After curing, lightly sand the area to create a smooth surface.
- Finally, seal the repaired spot with a matte or satin clear coat from furniture or craft supplies to prevent moisture from causing further damage.

If the edges are very badly damaged, a thin edge banding foil can be an alternative, although it is more time-consuming.

This method ensures a durable and visually appealing repair.

That’s exactly right! 🎯 If it’s your first time, take your time and test the wax on an inconspicuous spot first—you don’t want to make things worse 😅. For a bit of fun: after the repair, the edge trimmer almost feels like a furniture surgeon, and your BESTÅ gets a real pampering treatment. Always sand gently, or else it will look like a scraped knee! 😉

And hey, for sealing, be sure to apply the clear varnish carefully—it protects the repair well from further annoying chipping. Good luck, and feel free to share how it went!

If your goal is invisibility, use touch-up pens in the matching color and apply in thin layers. Let each layer dry thoroughly, as this greatly improves the outcome. Then apply a clear coat on top; this will make the repair hardly noticeable.
