Hello everyone, I have been having problems for some time with damaged handles on my Malm dressers from IKEA. On some drawers, the handles no longer fit properly or are even cracked. Since I like to do repairs myself, I would like to know: What steps do you recommend to safely and permanently repair or replace damaged Malm handles? I have noticed that the mounting screws are often loose or the material itself seems brittle. Are there any special replacement parts or technical tips for Malm furniture that I should keep in mind to prevent the handle from breaking again quickly? Thanks for your advice and experiences!

Regarding the threaded inserts that Surela mentioned – is there a specific size or brand that works well with MALM?In general, threaded inserts with M4 threads are recommended, as many MALM handles are attached using M4 screws. Brands like "TOX" or "Fischer" offer high-quality models that can be easily tapped in. You will also need a tool attachment for setting the inserts or can carefully tap them in using a hammer and a wooden block.

whether gluing with wood glue and wooden dowels is also a long-lasting solution for assembly and disassemblyThis actually only works well under limited stress from repeated assembly. Frequent assembling and disassembling can weaken the joint. For a more durable solution with repeated take-downs, threaded inserts are better suited. For glue-only repairs, it is advisable to tighten screws moderately and avoid over-tightening.
If you like, I can provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to properly install threaded inserts.
