Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought the Billy desk riser from Ikea because I wanted extra storage space above my desk. Unfortunately, the unit squeaks with almost every movement, which is really annoying. I have already tried checking and tightening the screws, but the problem persists. It seems to me that the wooden joints or maybe the hinges could be causing it.

I am therefore looking for tips or proven methods to permanently and effectively eliminate this squeaking without having to take the whole thing apart or replace it completely. Has anyone repaired something like this before or has an idea which product or approach works best?

For background: It squeaks more when sliding or slightly adjusting the riser, rather than when bearing loads.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

Hi,

try treating the moving parts with a little graphite powder or silicone spray. Avoid using oil-based spray, as it attracts dust. If any screws are loose, tighten them again. This should help.

Hello Mattzar,

your description sounds like a typical issue with furniture that has wooden joints and hinges. The squeaking usually comes from friction at the connection points or dry screws.

As a first step, I recommend systematically checking all components: remove the screws, clean them, and if necessary, treat them with wax or graphite.

Sometimes simply tightening the screws carefully is enough, as the wood can settle under tension. For the hinges, applying oil or a suitable lubricant (silicone spray) that does not attract dust can help.

Be careful with oil or grease, as these often cause stains on the furniture.

If the attachment on individual wooden parts is too loose, you can also use small wooden dowels or glue as a last resort, but only if the squeaking comes from the joints.

This might sound like a lot of work, but usually, it’s a small detail that causes the annoyance. I hope you find a solution.

Hello Mattzar,

I had a very similar issue with an Ikea desk topper, though with a different model. The noises mostly occurred when moving the work surface.

My advice: First, check with a cloth whether any dust or small wood chips have settled somewhere, causing friction when moving. After that, I rubbed the contact points with candle wax, which works great to reduce friction and stop the squeaking.

If you try this, give the area enough time to dry, then move the topper several times so the wax spreads well.

Good luck with that! 🙂

Hey Mattzar!

That squeaking with furniture you use every day sounds really annoying! We can fix that! :-)

I had something similar once, and a little silicone spray applied to the contact points worked wonders. Just spray it, move the parts a few times, and voilà – no more noise. Just be careful not to get the spray mist on visible wood surfaces, as it can leave a slightly greasy residue.

Alternatively, if you prefer something natural, you can use beeswax. It’s great because it lubricates and protects at the same time.

Good luck, and let us know if it works out!

Thanks for the tip, graphite powder sounds interesting, I hadn’t thought of that before.

I checked again this morning; the screws were already quite tightly fastened. Applying a bit of wax sounds good in principle, does anyone have a specific wax recommendation?

Candle wax? Is regular household candle wax sufficient? That sounds quite simple.

I’ll try silicone spray first since I still have some at home. Thanks all for the quick suggestions!
