Hello everyone,

I have a problem with a bent IKEA Metod kitchen door. The door was slightly dented and now it doesn’t sit flush on the hinges anymore, which looks especially unattractive on the white fronts. I want to repair the door myself without having to replace it entirely.

My question is very specific: How can I carefully reshape a bent Metod door back to its original form without damaging the surface or permanently affecting the hinges? Is there a proven method using common household tools?

I would appreciate a detailed step-by-step guide, including tips on what to pay special attention to in order to avoid any further damage.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

for a warped Metod door, I recommend the following approach:

- Remove the door from the hinges and place it on a flat, clean surface.
- Gently tap out the deformation from the back using a rubber mallet or a softer piece of wood.
- Work on small areas one at a time and avoid applying too much pressure at once to prevent additional dents.
- First, check if the material (usually particleboard with a laminate) on the inside is strong enough.
- If minor imperfections remain, carefully smooth the edges with fine sandpaper (grit 320 or finer).

Important: Do not use strong heat or water, as the laminate surface on Metod doors is sensitive. If the door is severely damaged, consider replacement.

This method is more precise and reduces the risk of further damage.

This step is crucial, but before tapping out the warp, you should carefully examine the door to understand the type and direction of the deformation. IKEA Metod doors are made of coated particleboard, which may have a reinforced backing made of different materials.

My recommendation: Place the door on two sturdy supports so that the warp is freely suspended, then gently press from the back against the bulge. You can use a piece of wood as a lever for this. Avoid applying point loads that could damage the surface foil.

A tip: If the bend is not too severe, it often helps to store the door flat between two even surfaces under light pressure for several hours to straighten it.

Have you checked whether the hinges themselves are still intact and properly adjusted? Sometimes the door sits incorrectly because of that.

How severe is the warp (approximately how many millimeters)? That could affect the repair options.

Remove the door from its hinges, bend it back, align it, and check the hinges. Do not press too hard, or the membrane will tear.

Although this seems like a straightforward question, it’s important to keep in mind that Metod doors are not designed to be permanently bent and then reshaped. They mainly consist of a laminate or foil surface bonded to particleboard.

It would be helpful to know the exact extent of the deformation. Small dents can usually be fixed with gentle mechanical methods, but a full reshaping might cause structural damage. Have you considered whether replacement might be more cost-effective?

I agree; heat bubbles or moisture can permanently damage the appearance. Manual careful bending is probably the best DIY approach, if it works.

Place the door on two stable supports so that the deformation is hanging freely, and gently press from the back side against the bowing.

I can only agree with this. Additionally, I recommend making sure that the supports are clean and well-padded to prevent scratches on the sensitive surface.

For gently knocking out the deformation, you can also wear rubber or leather gloves to ensure even force distribution while protecting the surface.

Important: After this treatment, let the door dry thoroughly before reinstalling it to test. If the door still does not close properly, adjusting the hinges would be the next logical step.

If the door is severely warped, replacement is usually the only solution, since the film will tear if stretched too much.
