Hello everyone,
I’ve noticed some unpleasant water marks on my Malm dresser with a light wood finish, caused by placed glasses. My specific question is: What is the best way to remove these water marks from the MALM surfaces without damaging the coating or harming the surface?
I have already tried gently cleaning with water and mild dish soap, but the stains could not be removed that way. Are there any proven home remedies or special cleaning methods recommended for the surfaces of MALM furniture?
Thanks in advance for your expertise!

MALM furniture is usually coated with a melamine finish, which is quite resistant to water. However, water stains often appear due to remaining lime deposits or moisture trapped in the surface.
I recommend the following method: First, wipe the surface with a lint-free, slightly damp cloth. If the stain does not disappear, apply a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar to a soft cloth and gently rub the affected area. Vinegar helps dissolve lime deposits.
Afterwards, wipe again with clean water and dry immediately to prevent any new moisture from seeping in. Avoid using harsh abrasives or rough cloths, as these can damage the finish.

Why not use natural oils or polishes instead, which help preserve the surface and even restore some shine? Sure, melamine is durable, but the coating is not a typical wood surface that should be treated with oil.
In my opinion, the vinegar method is too harsh, especially if used frequently. Have you had any experience with alternative products?
Hello mirabi,
I would like to add some information about how water stains occur: they are usually caused by mineral deposits when water is not dried immediately. For a surface like MALM with a melamine coating, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Here is a gentle, proven method for removal:
1. First, wipe the surface with a dry microfiber cloth.
2. If stains remain, use a damp cloth with a little dish soap and immediately wipe again with clear water.
3. For stubborn stains, a paste made of baking soda and water can help. Apply it gently by dabbing, not rubbing, then wipe off thoroughly and dry.
It is important to dry the surface right away afterwards to prevent further damage.
If you prefer home remedies, I advise against strong chemicals as they can damage the coating.
I hope this helps you! 🙂
