Hello everyone, I have a problem with water stains on my IKEA Malm furniture, specifically on the white lacquered surface. These stains are quite stubborn and appear despite using coasters. I’m interested in knowing: How can I effectively remove these water stains from my Malm furniture without damaging the surface? Are there any special home remedies or professional products that have proven effective? I would like to know which methods work best, what to avoid, and perhaps also how to prevent these stains. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Benfi,

First, I would like to understand exactly what kind of water stains these are – are they white rings that look like moisture beneath the finish, or are they actually superficial water rings?

In general, for Malm furniture with melamine or painted surfaces, you need to be careful when cleaning, as harsh agents like solvents can damage the surface. A recommended first step is:

1. Use a soft cloth with some lukewarm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Wring it out well and wipe gently.

2. Let it dry, and if the stain is still there, you can try a home remedy like a baking soda paste (mix baking soda with a little water, let it sit briefly, then gently rub, do not scrub).

3. For stubborn stains, a very fine professional furniture polish can be used, but always test it first in an inconspicuous area.

Be cautious with oil or wax, as these can discolor the surface. Also avoid heat sources like a hairdryer, which can damage the finish.

To give you more specific advice: Is the surface really painted or more like laminate/melamine? When did the stains appear – recently or over a longer period? Are there any scratches nearby?

Simple method: Gently treat the water stain with non-gel toothpaste and a soft cloth, then wipe it off. Would that be an option for you?

For water stains on painted furniture, rubbing in furniture polish or a special varnish cleaner, available at hardware stores, often helps. Use sparingly.

Thanks for the initial information, Nathanaelk! The marks appear more like white edges and seem to be on the surface. The furniture is treated with a lacquer-like protective coating, so it’s not pure melamine. Some marks are already a few weeks old, others more recent. There are no scratches nearby, and the wood underneath looks intact.

Toothpaste sounds interesting – are there any recommendations on which type works best? Is there anything to keep in mind afterward to avoid leaving traces? I would prefer to use harmless household remedies if possible.

The white water stains caused by stagnant water or condensation are usually due to moisture trapped under the paint or sealant.

A proven method is to gently iron the affected area using a clothes iron set to a low temperature (no steam) with a cotton cloth placed between the iron and the furniture surface. This heats the spot and can help evaporate the trapped moisture.

Important notes:
- Never apply the iron directly onto the paint.
- Constantly monitor the process to avoid overheating.

Unfortunately, this step can be risky on sensitive surfaces, so it is advisable to test it on an inconspicuous area first.

An alternative is to lightly polish the area using special microfiber cloths and furniture care products that do not leave residues.
