Good evening to the forum,

We have purchased an old house by the lake and are planning several renovation works.

First, I want to remove the textured plaster in the children's room and then wallpaper the walls. What is the best way to remove the plaster?

Best regards and thanks in advance for the answers

With hammer and chisel? Well, it depends on what’s underneath. I assume there’s a base plaster, which you’ll need to remove. So just use the hammer and chisel to chip away down to the masonry, and then either apply a new smooth plaster or drywall on top.

Well, I think you won’t be able to avoid chiseling. The plaster adheres firmly to its substrate, so simply wiping it off with a cloth won’t work, and depending on the surface, it could be quite challenging.

One option would also be to level the plaster using a filler compound. The rough surface provides excellent adhesion for the plaster. I have successfully repaired many walls this way.

Hi Haus am See,

Of course, it would be a lot of work if you had to chip everything off. Therefore, I can only agree with Rufus's suggestion. If the textured plaster is not too coarse, I would also level it with a filler compound. But only if the textured plaster is still well-adhered and dry.

If this is a dispersion-based plaster, it can be removed using a paint stripper. Apply the paint stripper generously, allow it to soften for the recommended time, then scrape it off and rinse thoroughly with water.
