Hello everyone,

I recently bought an IKEA Besta shelving unit and am wondering about the best way to remove stickers from the MDF surfaces and edges without leaving any residue. It is important to me that no adhesive remains or damage occurs to the surface, as I might want to repaint or cover the unit with a film later on.

So far, I have only tried carefully peeling off the stickers, but this did not work completely and left some adhesive residue behind. I am aware of methods using oil, acetone, or a heat gun, but I am unsure which is the gentlest and most effective for painted or coated surfaces.

Does anyone have experience removing stickers specifically from IKEA Besta or similar furniture? What products and procedures would you recommend to achieve a clean, residue-free result?

I am really looking forward to your tips and ideas.

Hello berkne,

I have personally had several pieces of furniture from IKEA where I needed to remove stickers or adhesive residue. It is important to proceed as gently as possible to avoid damaging the surface.

The following method has proven effective:
- First, carefully peel off larger stickers using your fingers or a plastic scraper.
- Then, apply some warm cooking oil or baby oil to the adhesive residue and let it sit for a few minutes; this usually softens the glue.
- After that, wipe off the residue with a lint-free cloth or a soft sponge.
- If that’s not enough, you can carefully use isopropyl alcohol or common rubbing alcohol (test first on an inconspicuous spot) to help remove the remaining adhesive.

Important: Avoid strong solvents like acetone or nail polish remover on painted or plastic surfaces, as these can cause dulling or discoloration.

Instead, consider using the heat from a hair dryer to soften the glue without overheating. This method usually works quite well!

I would warm it up with a hairdryer and carefully peel off the adhesive tape. If any residue remains, remove it with some oil or rubbing alcohol. Do not use harsh chemicals.

The key to residue-free removal lies in the combination of heat and gentle substances that dissolve adhesive residues.

A proven method:
- Warm the stickers with a hairdryer at around 40-50°C (104-122°F) to reduce the adhesive strength
- Then peel them off quickly to prevent adhesive residues from remaining
- To clean off any adhesive residue, use a lint-free cloth with warm water and a little dish soap
- For stubborn residues, diluted isopropyl alcohol can be used, but always test it first on an inconspicuous area

This approach protects the surface while remaining effective.

That is absolutely correct. Besta shelves usually have a melamine-coated or painted surface, so care is needed.

Another tip: after removing adhesive residue, you can use a furniture polish or a mild polish designed for painted surfaces to restore shine and create a uniform appearance.

To add to this, I would like to suggest the following structured procedure:

- Step 1: Mechanically remove the stickers using a soft plastic scraper to avoid scratches
- Step 2: Warm the adhesive residue with a hairdryer (around 40-50 degrees Celsius, not hotter)
- Step 3: Treat the adhesive residue with oil (e.g., cooking oil) and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes
- Step 4: Wipe off with a microfiber cloth and repeat if necessary
- Step 5: If residues remain, apply alcoholic solvents (70% isopropanol) sparingly, always performing a compatibility test on a hidden area first

The reason for using cooking oil is to chemically soften the acrylic or hotmelt adhesive commonly used on IKEA stickers.

Aggressive solvents should be avoided, as they can damage the surface of coated panels and cause irreversible harm.
