Hello everyone, I plan to modify my IKEA Malm furniture myself and make some adjustments, such as creating more storage space, possibly changing the fronts, or repurposing the drawers. I am especially interested in practical tips on disassembling without causing damage, suitable tools, and instructions for redesigning drawers and surfaces. Handling these cheap-looking particleboard panels without swelling during processing is also a concern. Does anyone have experience with modifying Malm furniture? What steps are essential to achieve a good result? Thanks in advance for any advice and tips.
Hello Par42, I have modified several Malm dressers and would like to share a brief step-by-step guide:
1. Disassembly: Carefully loosen screws and dowels to avoid damage. It’s best to use a small Phillips screwdriver and a rubber mallet for stuck parts.
2. Surface preparation: The particleboard panels absorb moisture, so clean well before sanding and then apply a penetrating primer.
3. Drawer modification: Internal dividers can be built using wooden strips. Pay attention to precise measurements to avoid obstructing the drawer’s movement.
4. Painting: Use water-based paints, as they adhere better and cause less swelling.
Common mistakes I’ve seen: Many people unnecessarily drill holes in the panels or use overly aggressive abrasives – this weakens the surface. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

1. Dismantling: Carefully loosen screws and dowels to avoid damage. Thank you, that sounds logical and helpful! How can you tell if the particle board is starting to swell? Should anything besides primer be applied before painting? Is there a specific primer you would recommend? The drawer parts seem quite unstable; is there a way to reinforce them without fully replacing them?
Malm furniture is mainly made from thin MDF or particleboard panels, which can swell quickly when exposed to moisture, noticeable by swollen edges or chipping material. Before painting, it is essential to use a moisture-resistant primer to protect against dampness.
For the primer, use a PU (polyurethane) sealer that seals and stabilizes the surface.
To reinforce drawers, you can glue strips inside the corners to add strength without affecting the appearance. It is best to use wood glue along with small screws if possible. Just be careful with the thickness so the drawers still slide smoothly.

It’s awesome that you’re exploring the topic so thoroughly! I enhanced my Malm dresser with MDF panels and then completely redesigned it with colored paint – it was a fantastic project! Just be careful during assembly not to screw the screws in too deep, or the particle board will break! 🙂 And a good tip: drawer inserts with backs made from thin plywood add stability and look really classy. Good luck, it’s really fun :-)
