Good morning everyone!

I’m currently facing the challenge of assembling some Ikea Hemnes furniture on my own – specifically a Hemnes TV bench and a Hemnes shelving unit. My question is: What’s the fastest way to assemble Ikea Hemnes furniture by yourself without losing track or making mistakes that could cost a lot of time later on?

I’ve already looked into general tips for more efficient furniture assembly, but Hemnes seems to be in a different category due to the many individual parts and sometimes complex components. Are there any tricks for prioritizing the assembly steps effectively or tools that really help?

I would greatly appreciate any advice on a practical order for the tasks, tips for handling the supplied screws and connectors, or recommendations for useful preparations before starting the assembly!

What kind of sorting boxes or trays would you recommend?

I would say it depends on the number of parts. For Hemnes furniture sections with many small screws, sorting boxes with multiple small compartments work best. This way, you can separate screw sizes, wooden dowels, and plugs, for example.

A simple alternative is a cardboard egg carton, which provides enough compartments depending on the number of screw types. Small glass bowls or empty jam jars can also be practical. It is important that the containers are stable and non-slip to prevent parts from shifting or mixing.

The most important thing is to consistently avoid mixing parts during assembly and to immediately put them back in their designated places.

I only partly agree with that. Efficiency also comes from technique and planning.

In addition to the methods already mentioned, I recommend marking components of larger furniture pieces with temporary labels (e.g., tape or pencil) before assembly to help identify parts more quickly.

Using self-adhesive labels is also worthwhile when you have several similar packages of screws and parts in front of you. This saves time during sorting and reduces errors when turning and inserting.

The workpiece should also be placed at eye level on a sturdy table or workbench – this makes assembly more comfortable and faster in the long run.

A small practical tip: Use a magnetic pickup tool for dropped screws. It saves a lot of time and frustration.

Also: Screw screws in lightly at first, align everything, then tighten fully.

Thanks for the tip. I've noticed that this is often recommended here and in the forum as well.

One last question for everyone: How much time should I allocate to assemble a Hemnes shelf if I’m working completely alone and taking short breaks in between? I want to plan realistically without putting pressure on myself.
