Hello everyone, I have a few Malm furniture pieces from Ikea that have developed minor scratches from everyday use. I am looking for effective methods and materials to make these scratches less noticeable or to remove them. It is important to me that the surface texture and color are preserved as much as possible, since these are mostly light-colored furniture parts. So far, I have considered furniture polish, stain, or wax, but I’m unsure which solution is truly long-lasting and gentle on the surface. What experiences do you have with refurbishing and treating scratches specifically on Malm furniture? Are there any special products or tips you would recommend to significantly reduce the visibility of scratches without damaging the surface?

As a supplement: Repair kits for laminate surfaces are often well suited for Malm furniture, as these kits are specifically designed for similarly coated materials. They usually contain wax and color pastes in various shades, allowing for precise color matching. It is important to thoroughly clean the surface beforehand to ensure good adhesion.

From this perspective, laminate repair kits are often the best choice.

In addition to the previous advice, I would like to emphasize the importance of thoroughly cleaning the area before treatment to remove dirt and dust, as these could otherwise be ground in and affect the effectiveness of the repair.

You should also carefully follow the product instructions and allow the material to fully cure after application, often for several hours. Polishing the surface afterwards will improve the result.

As RonJarrett already mentioned, repair kits designed for laminate are recommended because MDF surfaces are usually melamine-coated.

Treat scratches according to their depth using furniture wax or a repair marker. Fill deeper damage with wood filler, allow it to dry, then gently sand and polish.

I would like to revisit a frequently mentioned method: carefully sanding small scratches on Malm furniture requires very fine sandpaper and a steady hand. This process is not without risk, as the melamine coating is only a thin protective layer. Small mistakes can quickly become larger. I recommend testing first in inconspicuous areas or using repair wax or touch-up markers.

Wax or light-colored furniture repair wax is usually sufficient for minor scratches.

This is often the best compromise between effort and results.
