Hello everyone, I hope to find people here with experience handling IKEA Platsa furniture and pets. My question is quite specific: How can I protect my Platsa cabinets from scratches, bites, or other damage caused by my cats and dog? The furniture is made of lacquered wood-based material and is very sensitive to scratches and moisture. Do you have practical tips for prevention or proven methods to minimize damage? It is also important for me to know which materials or protective films are recommended that are pet-friendly and at the same time durable. If you have experience with special covers, coatings, or even home remedies, I would appreciate any help! Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hello Miposan, I would recommend using scratch protection films made of transparent PET. They are durable, easy to apply, and protect against scratches. Additionally, you can avoid using scents that attract cats, making the furniture less appealing to them. On top of that, a linen-like cover helps minimize direct contact with the surface.

Hello Miposan, your concern is completely understandable, as IKEA Platsa furniture is popular but unfortunately not always durable enough for pets. Regarding your questions: protective films made of PET are indeed a good option since they are scratch-resistant and water-repellent. You can easily cut them yourself and attach them with double-sided tape without damaging the furniture. Alternatively, there are special clear coatings that provide additional protection, but make sure they are non-toxic and low-emission, especially when pets are involved. For cats, I also recommend providing some scratching boards or sisal toys to divert their attention away from the furniture. Dogs tend to chew on toys or furniture edges, so it can help to protect the furniture edges with corner guards made of soft plastic. I hope this helps as a starting point. If you want, I can mention more products that I have tested.

Due to the material composition of IKEA Platsa furniture (laminated wood-based panels), the surface is relatively susceptible to mechanical damage caused by pets. There are clear recommendations to minimize such damage: - Use thin, transparent protective films made of PET or polycarbonate that are scratch-resistant and water-repellent. - Apply furniture-specific protective coatings that are transparent and non-toxic. - Provide mechanical protection on exposed areas with corner protectors or padding. Additionally, it is advisable to monitor the animals’ behavior and offer alternative scratching or chewing objects. What I recommend is regular inspection and maintenance of the protective films to detect any damage early and replace them as needed.

That might work in practice for some, but I consider this method quite limited since animals, especially cats, are very agile – the cover could slip quickly or get scratched itself.

Caution is advised here, as some tapes leave residues, especially on painted surfaces like those in Platsa. Not every adhesive can be removed without leaving marks.

I believe a sustainable solution requires more than just a surface coating or cover. It is also important to analyze the behavior of the pets and respond accordingly, for example through increased engagement or targeted training measures. Without addressing the root cause of the damaging behavior, usually only the consequential damage can be prevented, not the cause.

Has anyone here already had experience with behavior-oriented approaches combined with furniture care?
