sarkoHello everyone, I recently installed some IKEA Platsa furniture in my bathroom, but I’m a bit unsure about how to protect it from moisture. Since the bathroom is naturally a very humid environment, I would like to know the best ways to prevent moisture damage to these pieces without having to invest in expensive specialized furniture. What preventive measures would you recommend, for example regarding paint, seals, ventilation, or other protective methods? Are there any specific products or treatment techniques to make the furniture more resistant to the bathroom climate? I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or professional tips on this!
Good morning! I’m happy to explain the key points for protecting IKEA Platsa furniture from moisture in the bathroom.
1. Air circulation: As Kabau already mentioned, it is essential that the furniture is not placed directly against a damp wall, as moisture can penetrate from there. Small spacers or feet increase airflow.
2. Surface treatment: Platsa furniture is usually made of coated particleboard. The edges and any unprotected areas should be treated afterwards with a clear, waterproof varnish. PU or acrylic varnishes designed for damp rooms are best suited for this purpose.
3. Seals and trims at critical points: If water splashes or condensation forms on the front of the furniture, sealing joints and transitions with silicone seals or water-repellent trims can help.
4. Regular cleaning and inspection: A damp bathroom also requires regular ventilation to prevent excessive moisture in the room and resulting damage.
In summary: some physical effort during assembly, plus after-treatment at exposed areas. Following these steps will greatly improve the durability of your Platsa furniture.

Hi, great topic! 🙂 I also treated my Platsa furniture last week with a special moisture-resistant varnish. The result is amazing! The furniture looks like new and now feels much more durable. I also think it’s important not to keep the bathroom constantly too humid and to ventilate regularly!!! That really makes a big difference. So don’t get discouraged, it works really well! Good luck!!!

PU or acrylic paints are particularly well suited for damp rooms. Thanks for the tip on paint types! Do you perhaps have a recommendation on how to best clean the painted furniture without damaging the protective coating? Are there certain cleaning products that should be avoided? Also, I’m wondering if I should treat the back and inside surfaces of the cabinets as well, or if protection on the visible surfaces is sufficient? Looking forward to your thoughts!
Hello sarko,
I think your questions are very important because furniture maintenance is often underestimated. Regarding cleaning agents: it’s best to use mild cleaning products without harsh chemicals or abrasives. Ideally, use pH-neutral or mildly alkaline cleaners. Avoid strong alcohol- or ammonia-based products, as they can damage the finish.
As for treating the furniture areas: the back is usually less exposed, but if you live in a very humid bathroom, applying a protective coating there as well won’t hurt. You can especially protect the lower edges, which are more likely to come into contact with splashing water.
It’s also important that the furniture fully dries after applying the finish and is not exposed to moisture immediately.
If you need more details, I’m happy to help.
