ᐅ How can I protect Ikea Platsa units from moisture in the bathroom?

SinabelHello everyone,
I am planning to install an Ikea Platsa system in the bathroom but have concerns about moisture exposure, which tends to be higher there due to showering and the overall climate. My question is: How can Ikea Platsa be best protected against moisture in the bathroom so that the cabinets do not swell, mold, or get damaged by dampness over time?
I know the material is MDF-based and not specifically designed for wet rooms, but what measures can still provide reliable protection? Are there suitable additional treatments, sealants, or construction methods you would recommend? And what about ventilation—is it advisable to mount the cabinets slightly elevated or with a ventilated installation to improve airflow?
I would really appreciate any tips and experiences so I can make an informed decision and ensure the cabinet lasts as long as possible without problems after a few months or years.
Best regards!

As a general rule: Ikea Platsa is made of wood-based materials (MDF) that are not designed for damp environments. Therefore, direct contact with high humidity or splashing water should be avoided.
The following protective measures are advisable:
- Use water-resistant paints or sealants: Prime all surfaces and edges with a high-quality, waterproof paint (e.g., 2-component acrylic paint) or a specialized wood preservative. Applying multiple layers increases protection.
- Distance from walls/heaters: Do not install cabinets directly against exterior walls or close to sources of moisture, to allow better air circulation.
- Elevated installation: The Platsa system should be mounted on feet or a plinth construction to prevent damage from moisture on the floor.
- Room ventilation: Ensure sufficient ventilation through windows or mechanical ventilation to prevent moisture from settling on the furniture.
- Use of sealing profiles: Self-adhesive sealing strips on the back of the furniture may reduce moisture absorption.
Please note that despite all these measures, Platsa is only partially suitable for damp rooms. For wet areas, such as directly next to showers, materials like solid plastic or specially impregnated carcasses are more appropriate.

Brief and to the point:
- Apply water-repellent paint to all surfaces.
- Do not place furniture directly on the floor; use furniture feet.
- Ensure good ventilation; moist air must be removed.
- Avoid contact with direct splashing water.
This will help you prevent the most common damages.

To add to this, I would like to offer a brief guide on how to protect Ikea Platsa cabinets from moisture in the bathroom:
1. Preparation:
- Thoroughly dust and clean all cabinet parts.
- Pay special attention to the edges, as they absorb moisture more easily.
2. Coating:
- Apply at least two to three coats of a waterproof clear varnish or wood preservative to all visible and hidden surfaces.
- Make sure not to neglect the back panels and interior surfaces.
3. Installation:
- Avoid placing the cabinet directly against walls where condensation occurs.
- Install the cabinet on adjustable feet or a base frame that raises the unit several centimeters (inches) off the floor.
4. Ventilation:
- Ensure sufficient air circulation. Ideally, the bathroom should be ventilated mechanically or by an open window.
5. Maintenance:
- Regularly check the furniture for signs of moisture damage.
- Clean up any splashes immediately and avoid standing water.
A common mistake is not sealing the edges completely, as these are especially vulnerable.

I would like to add some comments on the importance of using moisture-resistant components with Ikea Platsa. When assembling, you can pay special attention to reinforcing areas that are particularly exposed to moisture (for example, near the sink or close to the shower) by applying additional protective layers.
A proven method is to seal the back panel and visible edges completely with epoxy resin. Although this requires some effort, it provides an almost waterproof barrier. Fully impregnating the wood significantly reduces concerns.
I also recommend regular inspections and ventilation, especially since bathrooms often experience fluctuating humidity levels. Dehumidifiers can also be helpful in cases of high moisture exposure.
If possible, using metal feet or height-adjustable furniture legs that do not rust can help. This protects the cabinet close to the floor from any potential moisture seepage.
It’s important to remember that Platsa is not explicitly designed for such conditions. Therefore, preventive protection during installation and use is essential.

Thank you very much for the helpful advice and clear tips!
I have a follow-up question about the painting: Which types of paint are suitable? You mentioned 2K acrylic paint and clear coat – are there any alternatives that might be easier to apply or more affordable?
Also, how long should each coat dry, and is it necessary to sand between coats? And what about the edges – is it enough to apply a thorough single coat, or is it better to apply multiple coats?
I’m very interested in your practical experience regarding effort and durability, as I don’t have access to a professional workshop and plan to do everything myself.

That’s very valuable information, thank you! I will definitely keep that in mind.
Looking forward to more tips.
