Hello everyone, I recently bought some IKEA Brimnes furniture, mainly dressers and bedside tables, and I want to protect them from scratches as best as possible. Since the surface is made of laminated wood or MDF with a melamine coating, I’m a bit unsure about the best way to prevent visible scratches, especially because I have pets and often handle cups and other items. Does anyone have tips on protective treatments or specific care methods that have worked well? I’m thinking, for example, about impregnating agents, protective films, or other precautions, but I’m open to completely different ideas as well. I’d also appreciate hearing about experiences with the Brimnes furniture type. Looking forward to your advice!

I recommend cleaning the furniture regularly with a soft, damp cloth and avoiding harsh cleaners. For extra protection, you can attach felt pads under hard objects to prevent scratches caused by moving items such as vases or decorative pieces.

Hello Katatar, I find your question very well formulated and specific. To protect IKEA Brimnes furniture, I especially recommend paying attention to the proper care of the melamine resin-coated surface. This means avoiding harsh or abrasive cleaning agents and using only mild soap solutions or special furniture cleaners designed for melamine-coated surfaces.

Additionally, you might consider applying transparent table or furniture films to the surfaces. These prevent direct scratches and protect against liquids. For pet owners, soft protective films are useful because claws can often slightly damage the surface.

Another simple method: felt pads on the underside of objects, as Ingrid mentioned, also help prevent scratches.

If you have minor scratches, special repair kits for melamine-coated furniture, available either as liquid wax or markers, can sometimes help. I hope this is helpful to you.

The melamine surfaces of the Brimnes series are relatively durable but sensitive to mechanical damage such as scratches or impacts.

I agree with that. In addition, for everyday use, I recommend:
- Avoiding sharp or metallic objects directly on the surface
- Covering the surfaces with thin, transparent protective mats designed specifically for furniture
- For pet owners: using claw protection or other appropriate measures, as even small scratches can become quickly visible

It is also important not to place the furniture in direct sunlight to prevent material changes that could make the surface more vulnerable.

Thanks for the information so far! I wanted to ask specifically: Does anyone have experience with protective films especially for the Brimnes series? Are there differences in adhesion or appearance? I want to avoid the film forming bubbles or unsightly edges. Also, if anyone knows products that work well against scratches on melamine, regardless of the film, I would be interested in that as well.

The Brimnes furniture from IKEA features a melamine resin surface, which is generally resistant to abrasion but may not always prevent mechanical scratches.

For protection, I recommend the following approach:
- Use self-adhesive protective films specifically designed for furniture surfaces. These are usually made of transparent polyurethane or PVC and have varying adhesive properties, which, when applied carefully, can prevent blistering.
- Before applying the film, it is advisable to thoroughly clean the furniture surface with an isopropanol-based cleaner to remove grease and dust.
- Surface films with UV protection also help prevent discoloration.

For scratches that are already visible, repair kits containing polishing wax or pastes with very fine abrasive particles can be used to slightly smooth and improve the appearance of the surface. Be aware of the risk of dulling, so apply only when necessary and with caution.

Ultimately, avoiding contact with sharp objects is the best prevention.

I hope this factual overview is helpful.
