Hello everyone, I am planning to put an Ikea Besta sideboard in the bathroom because I need extra storage space. Since the furniture is not originally designed for damp rooms and is made of engineered wood panels, I am concerned about possible moisture exposure and resulting damage such as swelling, warping, or mold growth. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to effectively protect a Besta in the bathroom from moisture? I am thinking of possible sealants, special treatments, or suitable placement options to minimize moisture impact. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Lotolis! Great topic, I had the same problem myself and was able to solve it well! 😃 The key is to first thoroughly coat the furniture with a protective sealant that repels moisture. I used a clear polyurethane-based varnish, which is flexible, takes longer to dry, but holds up really well! Make sure to pay special attention to the edges since the wood is most vulnerable there. 👍 Also, don’t place the Besta directly against the wall—use small spacers about 5mm (0.2 inches) thick to allow better air circulation. Personally, I also put silicone rubber or plastic feet underneath so water can’t be drawn in from the floor. My Besta has been in the bathroom for over two years without any issues! Good luck, hang in there, you can do it! 🔥

Hello Lotolis, as an addition: Ikea Besta is made of MDF or particleboard, so the furniture piece is prone to moisture and swelling damage. Possible protective measures include:
- Applying a final seal coat of water-resistant varnish (PU-based, 2-3 layers) on all visible and hidden surfaces
- Sealing the edges particularly carefully, as they are the most vulnerable
- Using rubber feet to avoid direct contact with the floor
- Installing with spacers to the walls to allow air circulation
- Positioning in protected areas to prevent direct splash water exposure

It is important that no moisture can get underneath the furniture. Regular ventilation in the bathroom also helps maintain the overall climate.

Hello everyone! I would like to add to the topic and point out some common mistakes.

First: Many people think a simple clear varnish is enough, but often it is applied in too thin a layer, which significantly reduces protection. At least two coats with light sanding in between ensure better sealing.

Second: The edges on the cabinet are the weak points. I recommend additionally sealing them mechanically and moisture-resistant with edge banding or standard edge protectors.

Third: The location in the bathroom is crucial. If possible, place it near an exterior wall with a window to avoid condensation.

Summary:
- Seal thoroughly with multiple layers (don’t forget the edges)
- Use edge banding or edge protectors
- Leave a gap to the wall for air circulation
- Choose a location with good ventilation

If the furniture in the bathroom is exposed to high humidity permanently, consider waterproof alternatives.

Exactly, that’s the key. Seal the edges with special edge protection tape, otherwise moisture will penetrate. Keep a distance from the wall, at least 1 cm (0.4 inches) helps.

In addition to what has already been mentioned: there are special water-based moisture-resistant varnishes that provide better protection than conventional clear furniture lacquers. These are usually more elastic and more resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations. It is recommended to varnish all surfaces, including the inside and undersides of the Besta units.

Furthermore, the bathroom flooring should be properly tested or approved. Water on the floor can penetrate the furniture. A protected area, for example with a waterproof mat, can offer additional protection.
