Hello everyone,

I am facing an issue and hope to get your advice: How can I best protect my IKEA Billy bookshelves from high humidity?

The shelves are located in an older basement room that is often damp and sometimes has humidity levels above 70%. I am concerned that the wood might swell, warp, or develop mold.

What measures are suitable to extend the lifespan of the Billy shelves there? Are there special sealants or structural adjustments I can make?

I would appreciate practical tips that are not too expensive but still reliable. Thanks in advance!

Great that you’re putting so much thought into this! 🙂 My tip: try to keep the humidity consistently below 60%! I managed this with a small electric dehumidifier, and my Billy shelves look great!

I also treated the shelves with a special furniture oil. It provides excellent protection and gives a really nice, natural finish!

Good luck – you can do it!

I think that’s a good starting point, but we should stay realistic: a damp basement can be subject to seasonal fluctuations.

How exactly do you measure the humidity over time? Do you have any data or devices that track it? I ask because some dehumidifiers only provide short-term relief, and a long-term solution often requires structural measures.

I have had a hygrometer in the basement for months that records data autonomously. The graphs show that with the dehumidifier, the humidity remains stable and below 55% for several weeks!

So, a great addition!

Just a quick reminder: Never place Billy shelves directly against exterior walls. Allow some space for air circulation. Sealing only helps to a limited extent.

Thank you all for the many responses!

I have now ordered a dehumidifier and will place the shelves on small wooden feet to avoid contact with the floor.

Regarding the finish, I am leaning towards a breathable furniture oil, as recommended by cassandra and Jeanbar.

I am also curious: do you have experience with whether it’s better to remove the back panels of the shelves or replace them with a thinner alternative to improve air circulation? Or would that reduce the stability of the structure too much?

Looking forward to your opinions!
