Hello everyone,

I recently purchased the popular BILLY bookshelf from IKEA and plan to use it long-term in a rather dusty room. My question is: how can I protect the BILLY from dust without significantly changing its appearance or limiting its functionality?

Specifically, I'm interested in whether there are effective and visually unobtrusive methods to prevent dust buildup inside the shelves and on the surfaces. Are simple covers enough, or would a special dust protection solution, such as films or doors, be advisable?

I want to avoid restricting airflow too much and keep the bookshelf easily accessible. I would appreciate any tips, material recommendations, or experiences from similar situations!

Hi Sepoleo :-)

I think dust is the invisible enemy of every piece of furniture! For BILLY, there are some great solutions that not only protect but also preserve its charm. Doors are, of course, the classic option: IKEA itself offers suitable glass doors that provide excellent dust protection while keeping the shelf looking elegant.

Alternatively, lightweight fabric covers can be used, which can be quickly removed when needed – this helps maintain better air circulation compared to closed doors.

A charming idea I’ve seen is hanging a simple plexiglass sheet in front of the shelf. You can see everything, dust doesn’t settle, and it gives a more modern look. But be careful: it needs to be securely fixed so it doesn’t wobble or get dirty.

If you enjoy cleaning, regular dusting and possibly a small air filter in the room can suffice. You’ll never be completely dust-free, but it can be kept well under control :-)

Regarding how to protect the BILLY shelf from dust, there are several practical approaches that should be adapted to the conditions of the installation site.

1. Doors: Adding BILLY doors (wood or glass) has been proven effective, as they significantly reduce dust buildup. Glass doors are also easy to maintain.

2. Cover films: Clear plastic films can protect the surface from dust, but they usually impair usability and reduce ventilation inside the shelf, which can potentially encourage mold growth.

3. Regular cleaning: In dusty environments, weekly cleaning with a microfiber cloth is recommended to promptly remove dust accumulation.

4. Improving indoor air quality: Air purifiers and humidifiers reduce the amount of dust in the room, which indirectly helps prevent dust buildup on the shelf.

Recommendation: For shelves that remain dust-free over time, glass doors from the IKEA range are suggested. They are visually appealing and more practical than films or temporary covers.

Hello Sepoleo,

to fully address your question, here is an overview of the most common measures to effectively reduce dust in a BILLY bookcase:

- Doors: As mentioned earlier, glass doors are a good choice because they provide a physical barrier that makes it much harder for dust to get inside the bookcase. IKEA offers custom options that are easy to install.

- Fabric covers and roller blinds: These can be removed flexibly but are not as effective as solid doors and also allow more moisture through.

- Plexiglass or acrylic panels: Custom-made solutions can be expensive, but the protection is almost perfect and visually neat.

- Regular cleaning: Removing dust inside and around the bookcase is essential. Microfiber cloths or dust magnets are ideal.

- Location: If possible, place the bookcase away from windows or radiators, as dust tends to be stirred up more by air movements in those areas.

The most important tip is a combination of physical coverage and regular maintenance to optimally protect the BILLY from dust buildup.

I completely agree! I would just add that especially with older BILLY shelves, sometimes the doors need to be readjusted – if they don’t close tightly, even the best protection won’t help much.

Here’s a small tip: if you want something a bit more flexible, try self-adhesive magnetic strips. They’re easy to attach and allow quick access to the shelves. For people who frequently reach for books or items, it’s a fun alternative.

Also, don’t forget that dust protection partly comes down to getting used to it – sometimes having a regular cleaning routine helps a lot. Plus, the shelves will look more cared for afterward 😉

So, the choice of protection method depends on how you use the shelves. Wishing you the best of luck keeping dust at bay!
