ᐅ How should I properly store Malm furniture between moves?

Hello everyone, I am planning a move soon and I own several Malm furniture pieces from IKEA. Since the actual moving date is still several weeks away, I need to store the furniture safely and properly for a certain period. The Malm range is mostly made of wood-based panels covered with particleboard, so I am concerned about the best way to store them temporarily without causing damage.

I am especially interested in advice on the following points: What is the best way to store the furniture if it is partially disassembled? In which room or under what conditions should the furniture be stored to avoid warping, water damage, or surface defects? Also, are there specific packaging materials that should definitely be used or avoided?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

What I can add: Regularly check for moisture or mold during the storage period. This is especially important for particle boards, as they are susceptible if stored improperly. A room with good ventilation and a moderate temperature is essential.

I also recommend not placing heavy objects on the stored furniture panels, as this can cause pressure marks or deformation.

I understand the concern about potential damage to the furniture. What helped me was storing the parts in a way that allows you to check on them occasionally without having to disassemble everything again. This way, you feel more at ease and can avoid any unexpected issues.

From an objective perspective, the following points are crucial for Malm furniture:
- Storage temperature: ideally 15-22°C (59-72°F).
- Maintain relative humidity consistently between 40-60%.
- Avoid direct sunlight exposure, as laminate surfaces can fade or become brittle.
- Store panels horizontally, not vertically, to prevent warping.
- Do not use plastic films that trap moisture.
- Using furniture fleece or blankets provides protection against dust and scratches while allowing air circulation.

These measures help minimize damage and keep the furniture in good condition.

Good point, JONKO. For the person asking: I would recommend choosing a storage area that is easily accessible. Parts you rarely need can be stored at the bottom, but delicate or disassembled parts should be stacked on top and kept freely accessible.

Never store Malm furniture directly on the floor

Absolutely correct. Always place sturdy pallets or wooden slats under furniture pieces to prevent cold or moisture from the floor affecting them.

Thanks first of all for the detailed advice! The storage room is a dry, heated basement space, but the humidity level has not been measured there; however, it does not seem to be too damp. Some of the furniture has already been partially disassembled, but the large tabletop panels are currently stored upright, which I plan to change fairly soon.

Can anyone share the best approach for packing? Should I simply wrap the panels with furniture blankets, or is it better to wrap them securely with stretch wrap? I’m a bit concerned that the surface might sweat underneath or that spots could form due to trapped moisture.
