Hello everyone,
I have had Billy shelves from IKEA for some time now, which I often use in the kitchen. Unfortunately, grease stains and stubborn dirt have appeared on the shelves and sides. Since the shelf is made of particleboard with a foil finish, I want to avoid damaging the surface.
My question is: How can I properly remove grease and dirt from Billy shelves without damaging the surface and without using harsh chemicals? Are there any proven home remedies or specific cleaning products that work well, and how should they be applied?
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Always wipe the surfaces dry after cleaningExactly, that should not be forgotten. Water on chipboard can really damage the material.

If you ever have tougher dirt, you could try a citrus-based cleanerThanks, fikeo, that sounds interesting. Can you recommend a specific citrus cleaner that works well for Billy shelves? And how often would you suggest doing a more intensive cleaning without damaging the laminate?
I want to avoid the surface becoming dull or rough after several applications.

Regarding your second question: Intensive cleaning with citrus or vinegar solutions should not be done more than once a month if you are only dealing with occasional grease stains. Frequent heavy cleaning can gradually damage the protective film. The general rule is: use as little chemicals as possible and as much water as necessary.

As little chemicals as possible, as much water as necessary. That’s a good motto. I will start with warm water and dish soap, and only use citrus cleaner cautiously if needed. Thanks to everyone for the helpful and practical advice!
