Hello everyone,
I recently got a Brimnes wardrobe from Ikea and now want to properly maintain the hinges to prevent wear and squeaking noises. I am especially interested in which maintenance products work best, how often the hinges should be treated, and whether there are specific methods to ensure smooth operation and long-term stability.
I definitely want to avoid causing damage with unsuitable products, such as aggressive cleaning agents or the wrong lubricants, since these are concealed hinges that are not easily accessible.
Does anyone have experience or useful tips on how to properly care for the hinges on an Ikea BRIMNES to keep them functioning well?

A few additional tips for maintaining the hinges on Ikea Brimnes:
- Always clean quickly before lubricating to remove dust and dirt.
- Apply the lubricant sparingly to avoid leaving residues.
- Make sure to use the right product: silicone spray or PTFE (Teflon) oil are ideal because they do not become sticky.
- After maintenance, check that the screws are securely tightened.
Ikea’s manufacturer instructions for BRIMNES do not recommend regular maintenance but suggest servicing as needed. Therefore, a check-up every six months is advisable.

For the hinges, I always use a thin oil, for example sewing machine oil. Thanks for the tip. Would sewing machine oil actually be better than WD-40?

I just use a WD-40 spray for hinges.WD-40 is more of a multi-purpose product – could it possibly damage the rubber seals on the doors?

Avoid grease-based lubricants, as they attract dirt and can cause buildup. That sounds reasonable, but isn’t sewing machine oil also rather oily/greasy?
So I’m looking for a lubricant that doesn’t gum up, won’t damage materials, and keeps the hinges running smoothly over the long term. Maybe silicone spray would be suitable here?
Who can explain the advantages and disadvantages of WD-40, sewing machine oil, and silicone spray for this kind of use?
