Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet door that has recently started squeaking quite a bit when opening and closing. The door is relatively new, but I suspect the issue is somewhere in the hinge. My specific question is: How do I properly fix a squeaking Ikea Metod door without removing the door and risking damage to the hinge? Are there any special tools or lubricants that work particularly well? What is the best way to proceed to ensure the squeaking stops long-term and doesn’t come back after a few days?

I would appreciate any detailed instructions and tips!

That is a very good and precise question! A squeaking hinge on a Metod door can usually be fixed with simple maintenance. I recommend the following steps:

- First, gently open the door.
- Most of the time, lightly lubricating the hinges is enough. Penetrating oils (such as a specific WD-40 or similar lubricant) work best for this.
- Apply the oil carefully to the joints and contact points of the hinge using a small brush or a cotton swab.
- Please avoid using grease or heavy oils, as these can attract dust and cause the squeaking to return.
- If you want to clean the hinge, you can wipe it with a lint-free cloth to remove dirt and dust.

I recommend not removing the door completely for this. The hinge is usually designed to be open enough to allow lubrication. If you find it too difficult, you can slightly unhook the door, but do so carefully to avoid losing the alignment.

Good luck! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Hello Blafe, just spray a little silicone spray directly into the hinge and the squeaking usually disappears immediately. No need to worry about disassembling it, as that is usually not necessary.

Allow me to give a more detailed explanation based on my experience with frequently installed Ikea kitchens:

The main issue with squeaking hinges is usually the friction between metal parts caused by wear or a lack of lubrication. The Metod hinge type uses a clip-on system designed to allow frequent mounting and adjustment of the door, which can also explain the typical noises.

Steps to fix it:

- First, open the door and closely inspect the hinges. The joint areas often have dirt buildup or dried lubricant that affects movement.
- You can carefully clean the joint areas with a lint-free cloth and some alcohol or isopropanol.
- Afterwards, it is recommended to apply a thin lubricant; specialized machine oil works better than thick greases that attract dust.
- When applying lubricant to the hinge, use only a small amount to avoid it running onto wooden parts or interior cabinet surfaces.
- If possible, you can briefly take the door off to access the hinges better. The clip system usually allows quick removal by operating a small lever at the hinge base.

For long-term protection, repeating this procedure once or twice a year is helpful, depending on how often the door is used.

Where does the squeaking come from? Missing or hardened lubricant causes friction between metal components, and small movements then produce unwanted noise.

One more question: Have you checked the door alignment? Sometimes noises also occur when the door is not properly aligned, causing the hinges to slide irregularly and produce squeaking.

Hey Blafe, that squeaking is really annoying! But don’t worry, we can fix it! 🙂

I just put a few drops of oil on the hinges of my Metod cabinet doors (I used special sewing machine oil) and then opened and closed the door several times. After that, the noise was gone. Important: Don’t use too much, or it will attract dirt!

Good luck, it will be quiet again in no time! 👍

Question: Have you checked the door’s stability?

Good question, thanks! The door is generally secure, but I did feel a slight sticking when pressing it downward. I will definitely check if an adjustment of the hinge is needed before applying the lubricant.

That sounds reasonable; there is a bit of dust indeed. I think I will clean it first, then lubricate.

I’ll report back once I’ve tried it—maybe someone else has further tips, for example on recommended lubricants?
