vinku55Hello community,
I hope you can help me. I own several BILLY shelves from IKEA and currently have a problem with stubborn stains, especially on the side panels and shelves, that cannot be removed by simple wiping. These are mainly dried spots and partially discolored areas, likely caused by liquids or dust.
I would like to know how you properly, yet gently, clean such stubborn stains on the white coated surfaces of the BILLY shelves without damaging or dulling the surface.
Are there any specific cleaning products or home remedies you would recommend? Or any particular methods that have proven effective?
I want to avoid the furniture becoming matte or scratched, and it would also be helpful if the methods are suitable for regular cleaning to keep the shelves in good condition over time.
Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

how to properly but gently remove stubborn dirt from the white coated surfaces of BILLY shelvesHey, I totally agree – those stains can be really annoying! What works wonders for me is a mix of warm water with a splash of mild dish soap. Just wipe with a soft cloth dampened in the solution, let it sit for a bit, then gently rub.
For stubborn spots, I like to use a white eraser (the kind used for paper) – it often removes stains well without damaging the surface.
And one more tip: Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads, or the shelf might end up looking worse than before!
Good luck! 🙂 Feel free to ask if you want more tips, I’m curious to see what other advice comes up here!
To effectively and gently remove stubborn dirt from BILLY shelves, I recommend the following approach:
1. Avoid using chlorine-based or aggressive cleaning agents, as they can damage and fade the melamine surface.
2. For dried-on stains, a common plastic eraser (e.g., Magic Eraser) is suitable – it removes dirt through mild abrasion without permanently damaging the surface.
3. Alternatively, a solution of 50% warm water and 50% vinegar essence can be applied and left to sit briefly. Afterwards, wipe down with clean water to avoid residue.
4. Use a soft microfiber cloth or gentle sponge for cleaning. Avoid steel wool or abrasive brushes.
After cleaning, thoroughly dry the surfaces with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.
This method preserves the surface while effectively removing stubborn dirt.

A soft eraser (including the white one for paper) often removes stains quite well That's true, I've tried it myself and it really works surprisingly well!
I'm generally not a big fan of home remedies, but for BILLY shelves, I find it really handy. I would also recommend always testing first in an inconspicuous spot to make sure the finish doesn’t come off.
Here’s a small lightweight tip: If stains are caused by grease or sticky residues, a mild glass cleaner with a low alcohol content can sometimes work wonders – just spray a little, not too much, and then wipe off with a soft cloth.
And very important: Never wipe with too much water, as moisture can seep into the joints and cause swelling – nobody wants that :-)
Good luck, and always remember: “Gentle is the way!”

A common plastic eraser (e.g., Magic Eraser) works well for dried stains This is the quickest method. Just dampen it and rub gently. Be sure to dry the area thoroughly afterward.
