vinkaHello everyone,
I recently purchased an IKEA Metod kitchen countertop and want to take proper care of it to keep it looking good for a long time. Iâm especially interested in how to clean these countertops effectively without damaging the surface or compromising its quality.
Iâm not only concerned with removing everyday dirt or stains but also with long-term maintenance â which cleaning products or methods are recommended, which should be avoided, and whether special care products make sense.
Does anyone have experience with cleaning agents that work well on this countertop without causing damage? And what about home remedies like vinegar or citric acid â are these advisable or rather harmful?
I would appreciate detailed tips or advice, including reasons or personal experiences, so I can take good care of the countertop.

Hey vinka, this is a great topic! đ Speaking from personal experience: IKEA Metod countertops are quite durable, but you still shouldnât scrub them with harsh cleaners. I always use a soft cloth, lukewarm water, and a mild soap. To remove stains, I gently use a sponge with a bit of dish soap. Very important: never use abrasive cleaners or steel wool â that will damage the surface!
And yes, home remedies like vinegar or citric acid are not recommended, as they can damage the coating and quickly leave dull spots. Itâs better to stick to natural products!
Clean regularly like this, and your countertop will stay beautiful and glossy. Good luck! đ

And yes, home remedies like vinegar or citric acid are not recommended, as they can damage the coating and quickly leave dull spots. This is a very important point! IKEA itself recommends gentle cleaning of Metod countertops using mild cleaners and soft cloths. For light dirt, a damp microfiber cloth is sufficient, while a few drops of dish soap in warm water can be used for tougher stains.
Avoid abrasive cleaners or those containing harsh solvents (alcohol, acetone, etc.), as they may damage the surface and affect its appearance.
There are special furniture care products available, but with Metod countertops, regular gentle cleaning is usually enough. Impregnation is not necessary since the countertops are already water-repellent.
For heavier stains, I recommend acting promptly and not allowing them to dry in order to prevent discoloration.
As a supplement, I would like to provide some precise cleaning and maintenance recommendations:
- Use only mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents specifically designed for coated surfaces.
- For daily cleaning, water and a soft cloth or microfiber cloth are sufficient.
- For stubborn residues, lukewarm water and a gentle cleaner applied with a non-abrasive sponge are recommended.
- Avoid vinegar, citric acid, or other acidic household remedies, as they can damage the coating.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or tools such as steel wool or scouring pads.
- Avoid direct heat and standing liquids to prevent damage to the surface.
Metod countertops are typically finished with a melamine coating, which offers a certain level of resistance but does not provide complete immunity against harsh chemicals or mechanical stress.
Regular maintenance ensures durability and preserves the appearance.

Vinegar, citric acid, or other acidic home remedies are not recommended, as they can damage the coating. That's exactly what I emphasized too! Glad to see we agree. đ
Another tip from me: If you have stubborn stains that donât come off with dish soap, you can gently try using a rubber eraser, but very carefully!
Personally, I find a stainless steel spray bottle filled with water and a bit of dish soap extremely practical. Just spray it on, wipe off, done. So little effort for so much care!
