Hello everyone, I recently bought some Malm furniture from IKEA and now want to take proper care of it to keep it looking good for as long as possible. My specific question is: How should Malm furniture be maintained, especially regarding surface treatment? I’ve read that these pieces usually have a lacquered or coated finish, but is it okay to clean them with common household cleaners? Or should special products be used? Which substances are recommended to avoid damaging the surface while also protecting it from scratches or discoloration? And what about moisture – is it safe to wipe the furniture with a damp cloth, or should that be avoided? I would really appreciate a detailed and practical answer, ideally including cleaning methods, recommended care intervals, and tips for preventing scratches. Thanks in advance!

I can only confirm: wax or oil on Malm furniture is unnecessary and sometimes counterproductive. Simply wipe quickly with a slightly damp cloth, then dry it off thoroughly—that is completely sufficient. To prevent scratches, it’s best to use felt pads.

I have had my Malm dressers for over 3 years now and only give them a light cleaning with a damp cloth. One thing I would like to add: you should definitely avoid cleaning with hot water or strong cleaning agents, as this makes the surface brittle. If stains do occur, I have had good experiences using a mild, diluted dish soap. And yes – felt pads are lifesavers; I don’t want any scratches, that’s just annoying. 🙂

Exactly. Do not use any additional care products. They can handle minimal moisture but no standing water.

Clean Malm furniture best with a damp, not wet cloth. Do not use cleaners containing chlorine or alcohol. Scratches can be avoided most easily by not placing sharp or pointed objects on the surface without protection. Act quickly on stains to increase the chances of removing them.
