I recently bought some Billy shelves from Ikea that have a laminated finish, and I want to take the best possible care of them to protect the surface long-term and avoid scratches. My question is: How should I properly maintain laminated Billy shelves? Specifically, I’m interested in which cleaning products are safe to use, how often I should clean the shelves, and if there are any special techniques or tools that help preserve the laminated surface. I’ve heard that harsh cleaners or too much moisture can cause damage. Additionally, I would like to know if there is a way to refresh the laminate or repair minor damage. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Thank you for the helpful advice so far! The shelf is located in a living area that does not experience extreme humidity or direct sunlight. It is in regular use, with books and decorations placed on it from time to time.

I rarely clean it thoroughly, mostly just dusting. Regarding care products, I don’t have any special ones on hand. Can you recommend specific products? Are there any DIY solutions or home remedies that are safe to use? Also, should I occasionally treat the surface with special care products, or is it better to avoid using any products altogether?

Maintaining laminated Billy shelves requires careful selection of cleaning agents and care methods. Products with a neutral pH are recommended. Examples include mild dish soap solutions or specific plastic cleaners such as “Praktik Kunststoffpflege” or “Wolff Möbelpflege,” which are silicone-free.

Home remedies like water with a small amount of vinegar should be avoided, as they can damage the laminate over time.

Regular dry wiping is usually sufficient; intensive treatment with care products is only necessary every few months to protect the surface and conceal minor micro-scratches.

Please note:
- Do not use abrasive cleaners
- Do not spray cleaning agents directly onto the surface
- Wipe dry after cleaning

Experimenting with so-called “home remedies” risks damaging the laminated surface structure.

I have applied laminate film to similar shelves and use a lightly diluted dish soap solution with warm water. A clean microfiber cloth ensures gentle cleaning. I avoid using any harsh cleaners altogether.

Preventing scratches is also helped by not placing heavy or sharp objects directly on the surface.

In addition, clean the shelves only with gentle movements and avoid wiping them too often – over-maintenance can also cause damage. For light dirt, dusting is completely sufficient.

Basically, you can achieve a lot with warm water and a mild dish soap. I would not recommend home remedies like baking powder or lemon juice, as they can damage the film. For surface protection, care products specifically designed for plastics are suitable – you can find these at hardware stores or furniture shops.

If you don’t have any products, it’s better to keep the film free from harsh substances, use soft cloths, and avoid excessive rubbing. This way, the shelf will last the longest.

I fully agree. For deep cleaning, it is also important to regularly check the edges of the protective films, as dirt often accumulates there and moisture can cause the film to peel off.

Another tip: When transporting or moving the shelving units, avoid direct contact between the film surface and hard edges, as it can easily tear. If small damages do occur, they can be carefully repaired with clear plastic adhesives or film repair kits.

Also, check whether your shelves were delivered with a protective film that needs to be removed before first use – sometimes it is forgotten, which can affect both appearance and maintenance.
