Hello everyone,

I recently bought an Ikea Brimnes wardrobe and I’m now facing the challenge of attaching the back panel correctly. Although the assembly instructions make it look straightforward, I’ve noticed during the build that the back panel doesn’t sit very firmly, especially in the corners.

I’m particularly interested in how to secure the back panel optimally so that it doesn’t wobble or come loose after a short time. Do I need to use all the nails, or are the included screws sufficient for a secure installation? Are there any tips for attaching the back panel without tension and keeping it straight? I’ve seen some people hammer the back panel in hard, which could damage the boards – I definitely want to avoid that.

If it’s relevant: I’m assembling the Brimnes with a width of 120 cm (47 inches) and using the standard back panel that comes with Ikea. I would really appreciate concrete advice or pointers on what to watch for to ensure the back panel is fixed optimally.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

for the back panel of the Brimnes, you should use all the nails provided. The parts need to fit flush to ensure the back panel is secure. No screws are used here, only nails that are carefully driven in with a hammer. If a nail gets stuck, you can gently reposition it to prevent any tearing or splitting.

Important: align the back panel first, then fix it in place. Do not use screws for this.

Absolutely correct! 😃 I just assembled my Brimnes and can confirm that you really need to use all the nails. You have to hammer a bit firmly, but be careful—not too hard, otherwise the back panel might warp or get dents.

At first, I hammered too gently, and the back panel was loose everywhere. Then I carefully hammered the nails in again, and ever since, everything has been solid!

So: Don’t be afraid, press firmly and evenly drive in all the nails. It’s definitely worth it! 👍

Good luck, you got this!

That’s a valid question, since many people simply hammer in the supplied nails blindly without paying attention to the details. Stability largely depends on the back panel fitting flush against the side panels and the bottom.

Here are a few thoughts:
- The back panel is usually very thin and lightweight; hammering too hard can damage or warp it.
- It’s important to distribute the nails evenly so the back panel is held under continuous tension.
- If the back panel doesn’t fit perfectly, it can help to make slight adjustments or to align the side panels more carefully during assembly.

In my opinion, even though it’s not explicitly recommended by Ikea, small spacers or thin sealing strips on the inside of the side panels might help create better tension without damaging the back panel.

Also, I wonder why only nails are used here by default. Wouldn’t a screw-based fixation with small metal brackets or self-tapping screws provide a more durable solution?

Nails alone may expand or loosen over time. I would recommend aligning the back panel correctly, inserting all nails, and then checking the stability with additional fasteners if the furniture is moved occasionally.

I’m curious to hear how others approach this and if anyone has tested an improved method for securing the back panel on the Brimnes.
