Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an Ikea PAX wardrobe system and am now facing the challenge of properly and neatly attaching the handles to the doors. My specific question is: How do I correctly install the Ikea PAX handles on the doors so that they are aligned and do not damage the door material?

I have noticed that many doors come with pre-drilled holes, but some models do not. Are there any special tips or tools for mounting the handles to ensure the screws are placed optimally? What screw length and size are recommended, and how can I avoid tearing out the material?

Additionally, I am interested to know if there are differences in the installation depending on the handle model, especially regarding the most secure attachment and appearance.

I would appreciate it if experienced users could share their tips and perhaps step-by-step instructions. Thanks in advance!

Hello teo-ne,

to answer your question as thoroughly as possible, I would like to cover the most important points regarding the installation of Ikea PAX handles.

- Pre-drilled holes: Most PAX doors come with pre-drilled holes that perfectly fit the supplied screws and handles. If not, it is advisable to pre-drill with a sharp wood drill bit to avoid splitting the wood. A 3-4 mm (about 1/8 inch) drill bit is usually appropriate.

- Screw length: Ikea typically provides screws that are specifically matched to the door thickness. Use these screws to avoid damaging the material.

- Installation: The screws are fastened from the inside of the door into the handle. Make sure to tighten them evenly and carefully using a Phillips screwdriver or a cordless drill with the appropriate bit to avoid over-tightening.

- Accurate alignment: Before screwing in, it helps to loosely position the handle on the door and check the placement. The supplied drill holes are mostly precise, but if you need to drill yourself, a measuring tape and a spirit level can assist.

- Handle model: There are different handle variants; some are mounted with simple screws, others with integrated click systems. The Ikea assembly instructions are usually clear, but in general: adjust the screws to the door thickness.

I hope this helps you a lot!

I would like to add that special care is needed when working with PAX doors that have a white foil surface to avoid scratches or cracks.

- Pre-drilling with a perpendicular drill bit is essential here
- Use a drill bit with a depth stop collar or drilling guide if possible to keep the material clean
- Tighten the screws only to the required torque; overtightening can first cause cracks and then pulling out

The door thickness of PAX can vary, so consider this value when choosing the screw length. The material is comparatively thin, so even distribution of the tightening force is important.

This is an important point: never screw from the outside to avoid a messy appearance and prevent damage to the surface.

I think this topic is being approached too cautiously. Sure, Ikea provides drilling templates and makes everything quite straightforward, but if you want to fit your PAX doors with handles the “right” way, you should think beyond the usual standards.

My point is: The pre-drilled holes are convenient, but if you prioritize absolute precision and comfort, you should make individual adjustments. Specifically:

- Before drilling, precisely check the handle position again using a template or sticker dimensions
- Possibly enlarge the hole slightly or countersink it where the handles will be placed, so the screw heads sit flush with the handle and not too deep
- Consider using screws with slightly stronger threads to ensure better grip if the base material is weak

Of course, this takes extra effort and isn’t for everyone, but this way the handle is really secure and also looks more high-quality.

Absolutely correct, but I would add that some users tend to screw too loosely by default – better to be careful, yes, but not too loose!

Summary of the most practical tips for correctly installing Ikea PAX handles:

- Most PAX doors come with pre-drilled holes, which makes positioning easier.
- For doors without pre-drilled holes, use a thin wood drill bit (approx. 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 inches)) and a drilling template to avoid damaging the material.
- Screws should be inserted from the inside of the door and tightened with a Phillips screwdriver or a cordless drill with torque control.
- Tighten the screws firmly enough to prevent looseness but avoid over-tightening to prevent stripping or cracking.
- Extra care is needed when working with laminated or painted doors to avoid surface damage.
- Tools such as drilling guides or countersinks can simplify installation and ensure cleaner results.
- Differences in handle models: standard handles are fixed with two screws, while designer handles may require special fastening techniques—refer closely to the assembly instructions in these cases.

It is recommended to "dry fit" all parts before assembly, positioning everything without screws. This helps identify potential misalignments early.

This approach minimizes mistakes and ensures a durable, visually pleasing result.
