Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install the Ikea Metod toe kicks in my new kitchen, but I have installed underfloor heating. My main concern is how to properly attach the toe kicks without damaging the heating mats or pipes, or reducing the heat output.

Specifically, I am interested in:
- What fastening methods work best for Metod toe kicks?
- Are there any special screws, clips, or adhesives that are recommended?
- Do I need to maintain a certain distance from the underfloor heating system?
- What experiences do you have if you have installed toe kicks over underfloor heating?

It is important to me that the toe kicks are securely fixed, look good, and that the heating performance is not compromised. I would appreciate any tips, especially Ikea Metod-specific solutions. Thanks in advance.

This is definitely an important question because you need to be very careful with underfloor heating to avoid any damage. I installed baseboards over underfloor heating myself two years ago, and I can tell you: avoid using screws that go deep into the floor, as that can easily cause problems.

Back then, I used special clips that only sit on the top of the insulation or screed. These held the baseboards securely without putting the heating at risk. Overall, I felt confident that the heat distribution remained unaffected.

Adhesive options might also be possible if the area doesn’t get too wet, but I personally think clips or special mounting profiles work best.

I have to disagree with that. Of course, drilling carelessly is a no-go. But if you know the pipe layout and proceed with caution, screws are not necessarily prohibited.

I think the general fear of screws with underfloor heating is often exaggerated. It depends on how deep the pipes are and how you work.

Also, some manufacturers offer specially shorter screws designed specifically for these kinds of baseboards.

So, it’s not so black and white—it’s a matter of the right approach. Relying entirely on clips and adhesives might risk not achieving optimal stability.

For Metod baseboards, I simply use the original Ikea clips, which are glued on. This holds very securely and protects the underfloor heating. I would only use screws if it is certain that no heating components will be hit.

Additional information:

- The Metod baseboards can also be fixed using mounting foam, which is flexible and does not affect thermal conductivity.
- When installing over underfloor heating, it is advisable to locate any pipes or cables within the screed using a cable locator or by consulting documentation before fixing the baseboards.
- A clearance of at least 10 to 15 mm (0.4 to 0.6 inches) from the heating mat is recommended to avoid direct mechanical stress or thermal blockages.
- Glue the baseboards with heat-resistant mounting adhesive, especially if the surface is smooth.

It is important that the fastening neither mechanically damages the heating elements nor impairs thermal insulation through excessive insulation.

This is really exciting! I personally glued Metod baseboards over underfloor heating and am extremely satisfied with the result! 😊

My tip: Use a good quality mounting adhesive that is suitable for wood and smooth surfaces. The baseboards hold perfectly, and I haven’t had any issues with shifting boards or heat loss.

Simply clean, glue, press down – done!

This way, you also avoid bothersome nails or screws, and everything looks nice and smooth.
