Hello everyone, I have a problem: I bought an IKEA Besta shelving unit, but the assembly instructions are missing. Since I want to assemble the unit myself but don't have the instructions, my question to the community is: How can I correctly assemble the IKEA Besta shelving unit without the manual? Is there a clear step-by-step method I can follow to avoid mistakes or make the assembly more efficient? It would also be helpful if someone could provide tips on aligning the parts and handling the typical fasteners such as dowels, cam locks, and screws, as I suspect there are some specific details for this model. Thanks in advance for your support!

In general, IKEA Besta can be assembled properly without instructions if you follow a systematic approach. It is important to first sort and identify all parts:
- Side panels, back panel, shelves, trims
- Fasteners such as dowels, cam locks, screws

The typical process is:
- First, connect the side panels with the shelves, inserting the dowels
- Cam locks are used to securely lock the connections; for these to work properly, the drill holes must align precisely
- After assembling the frame, attach the back panel, which is usually fixed with small nails and contributes to stability

A tip: Besta parts usually have pre-drilled holes, so you can quickly recognize the correct orientation by the hole pattern. It also helps to look at a similar Besta module or, if in doubt, watch IKEA’s assembly videos for similar furniture.

Hello Tarapin, to answer your question: Even without instructions, assembly is quite manageable with some patience. From my experience with Besta, it is especially important to follow the order of steps because once parts are joined, going back is difficult.

I recommend the following procedure:
- Check that all parts are present and sort them by shape and markings (if any).
- Start with the base and side panels, making sure to align the drill holes correctly, as this will make the next steps easier.
- Fully insert the dowels and then carefully fit the side panels together.
- Turn the cam locks to secure the connection, but do not tighten too much to avoid damaging the wood.
- The back panel is installed last and attached along the edges. It provides lateral stability.

If you want more detailed information, feel free to ask specific questions. By the way, many IKEA fans also use the PDF instructions from older Besta models as a rough guide. Good luck!

I would like to support and add to this: The rear panel is especially crucial for precise fitting and contributes significantly to the overall structural stability. Without the rear panel, the modules tend to twist under load.

Additionally, it is helpful to initially tighten all screws and cam locks loosely until all components are in place. Afterwards, you tighten them fully. This prevents stress or misalignment during assembly.

Just to respond, among other things: There are specific assembly steps for Besta units that aren’t always obvious.

Points to note:
- Different side panels are not always symmetrical, so the drilling and dowels only fit in the correct orientation.
- The shelves must be placed precisely on the designated dowel holes.
- When installing the cam locks, their orientation is crucial—the cam head must be inserted correctly and turned in the proper direction to lock.

If you keep these points in mind, the shelf will be stable and there won’t be any issues with the operation of doors or drawers. When in doubt, you can hold individual parts by hand to check if everything fits tightly without play.
