NekeoHello everyone,
I am specifically looking for a stable and well-founded guide on how to properly install the drawer slides of the Ikea Metod kitchen series. My main focus is on the best way to align the slides, which screws are recommended (possibly beyond the standard ones included), and how to ensure a long-lasting, stable assembly so that the drawers do not misalign or become loose over time.
Specifically, I am interested in:
- Which parts of the slide must be securely fixed
- Whether and how to pre-drill the screws
- Practical tips for installation (e.g., sequence, technical tricks)
I already have some experience in furniture making but want to avoid mistakes in the kitchen that could lead to wear or poor function later on.
I appreciate any precise advice and shared experiences!

Hello Nekeo,
you should always fasten the Metod rails completely along the designated holes. Pre-drilling helps to prevent the wood from splitting. Use screws with the same diameter as those included in the kit if possible, or slightly longer ones for better hold. Make sure the rail is positioned straight – checking with a spirit level before installation can help. First, secure the rail to the cabinet side, then to the drawer.

Make sure the runner is mounted straight – checking with a spirit level before installation can help.Precise alignment is indeed crucial. Additionally, Ikea itself recommends using the supplied screws for Metod, which typically have a diameter of 4 mm (0.16 inches) and a length of about 25 mm (1 inch). For softer wood, pre-drilling with a 3 mm (0.12 inch) drill bit can help prevent cracking or warping.
Furthermore, when installing, position the runners exactly at the marked spots and screw them in with light pressure to ensure smooth operation later on.
Here is a summary:
- Pre-drill for a clean fit
- Use screws fully, no shortcuts
- Exact horizontal alignment (parallel to the cabinet front)
- Attach cabinet first, then drawer
Stability depends not only on using the right screws but also on careful alignment.

Precise alignment is indeed crucial.I would like to add to that. There are a few details with the Ikea Metod drawer slides that are often overlooked but definitely important for stability:
1. Alignment: It’s essential not only to work horizontally but also to align the slides precisely vertically, otherwise binding can occur later on.
2. Pre-drilling: Always necessary, especially when working with particleboard, to prevent splitting. Using drill bits that are too large will weaken the hold.
3. Screw choice: Ikea screws fit well, but if the wood quality is weaker, threaded inserts or stronger screws (same thread diameter, longer length) can help.
4. Sequence: Usually mount the slides inside the cabinet first, position them accurately and secure them. Then attach the rail to the drawer. Avoid putting tension on the parts.
5. Adjustment: After installation, fine-tune the slides so the drawer runs smoothly. Metod slides offer small adjustment options for this purpose.
I’m also interested in your exact conditions: type of wood, cabinet depth, intended load? The more you can specify, the better the advice can be tailored.
Will you be attaching the slides to a wooden or metal cabinet? How large are the drawers (width/depth)?

Would you attach the slides to a wooden or metal carcass? What are the dimensions of the drawers (width/depth)?Thanks for asking, very helpful!
I’m working with an 80cm (31.5 inches) wide Metod carcass, 60cm (24 inches) deep, made from particleboard with a melamine coating. The drawers are 70cm (27.5 inches) wide and about 60cm (24 inches) deep. The load should be suitable for everyday use, from dishes to small kitchen utensils, so up to 15kg (33 lbs) per drawer.
The usual method is to fasten the side metal slides to the side of the carcass and the corresponding slides parallel to the drawer. The drawer itself is made from MDF.
I plan to pre-drill, but I’m unsure about the screws: should I use longer or thicker screws for the particleboard-like surface? Or are the supplied screws sufficient?
I look forward to recommendations specifically for particleboard-MDF combinations in a kitchen environment.

With your combination of particleboard (carcass) and MDF (drawer), you can generally use the Ikea screws, as they are designed for the intended purpose. However, it is recommended to pre-drill the screws into the particleboard to prevent splitting and ensure a secure hold.
If you want to be cautious and the drawers will be subjected to higher loads than usual (15 kg is moderate), it can be useful to slightly lengthen the screws on the carcass side by about 5 to 10 mm (0.2 to 0.4 inches) to achieve greater screw depth.
It is also important to use all the designated fixing points and to align the drawer slides with a spirit level. Making adjustments after assembly will ensure the drawer doesn’t misalign.
Finally, here is a tip:
- Use Phillips screws that match the screwdriver bit of your drill
- Pre-drill the particleboard with a 3 mm (0.1 inch) drill bit
- Attach the drawer slides to the carcass first, then mount and adjust the drawer
This will give you a durable and stable slide system. Good luck!
