Hello everyone,
I have a question about adjusting the drawers on my IKEA Malm dressers. Specifically, I want to know how to adjust the drawers so they don’t stick or sit crooked, but at the same time aren’t too loose. It seems there are several mechanical adjustment options, but I’m not completely clear on how they work.
Could someone please explain step by step which screws or levers should be adjusted and how, to ensure smooth opening and closing?
Are there any differences depending on the production year or version of the Malm dresser? I have the 3-piece model with metal drawer slides. Thanks in advance for your help!

I would like to complete the discussion with an addition regarding the mechanical details.
When adjusting Malm drawers with metal runners, there are often two main types of slide mechanisms:
- Full-extension slides (the entire drawer can be pulled out)
- Partial-extension slides
The adjustment nuts and screws differ depending on the type.
For drawers that sit crookedly, the horizontal adjustment is usually made with special eccentric screws. In Ikea Malm drawers, these are typically located directly on the drawer front, hidden behind the cover panel.
The vertical fine adjustment usually works via adjustment screws on the underside of the drawer front, which are fixed with small plastic clips. By slightly turning these screws, you can correct the front by a few millimeters up or down.
If your drawer sticks even though all adjustments are correct, you should also check whether the slides are properly mounted, not bent, and clean. Even slight dirt or misalignment can quickly cause noticeable resistance.
One last technical note:
Some Malm models have small plastic stoppers on the sides of the metal runners that can be moved to different positions to dampen the drawer’s movement when opening and closing. You can also check these if the drawer closes too hard or too loosely.
That’s a good point and should be done first before adjusting any screws.

Better check with a level to see if the chest of drawers is sitting properly.
