Hello everyone,

I recently bought a BILLY shelf from IKEA and am currently facing the challenge of adjusting the doors correctly. I noticed that the doors either don’t close evenly or hang slightly crooked. So my question is: How can I properly adjust the BILLY doors so that they are perfectly aligned, close cleanly, and leave no gaps? Are there specific steps or tips to keep in mind? I have already tried screwing and adjusting the hinges, but it still doesn’t fit quite right.

I look forward to your advice and experiences, including any recommendations on the individual screws or tools that work best.

Basically, adjusting the doors on a BILLY bookshelf is quite straightforward, but you need to proceed systematically. The doors are hung on two hinges that have adjustment screws. Keep in mind the following:

1. Vertical alignment — is the door level with eye height and aligned with the shelf unit?
2. Horizontal alignment — are the doors flush with the cabinet and parallel to each other?
3. Depth — do the doors close flush or do they protrude?

In my opinion, it helps to use a good crosshead screwdriver that won’t slip. First, slightly loosen the screws, roughly align the door, and then cautiously tighten them while checking the fit. Some screws adjust the door horizontally, others vertically, and some pull the door closer to the cabinet or let it stand off.

I also often question the shelf’s construction at this point. Uneven floors or warped cabinets can make adjusting more difficult. This means: before fine-tuning, it’s worth taking measurements with a spirit level and possibly shimming the feet.

Important: Simply tightening the screws without constant checking almost always results in crooked doors.

I can only agree with that. Additionally, I would like to emphasize the importance of the correct sequence when making adjustments. It is recommended to proceed as follows:

1. First, adjust the vertical position using the adjustment screw on the upper hinge.
2. Then check the horizontal alignment and correct it if necessary.
3. Finally, adjust the door depth so that it closes flush.

A general tip: BILLY hinges are typically clip-on hinges with quick adjustment. The adjustment screws usually control three functions: left/right, up/down, and forward/backward. Therefore, it is important to turn each screw carefully and check the effect afterward to avoid overlapping adjustments.

In terms of tools, a Phillips screwdriver size PH2 is ideal, as BILLY usually uses this screw type. Applying a little WD-40 to the hinges can make adjustments easier if the mechanism is stiff.

In summary, patience and a step-by-step approach are the key to success.

These issues often result from uneven load or incorrect adjustment, as already mentioned. Additionally, I would like to add the following points:

- Check whether the back panel of the shelf is tight and properly secured. A loose back panel can warp the shelf.
- Inspect the position of the shelves; excessive load in certain areas can distort the frame.

When actually adjusting the doors, I often use a small spirit level on the doors themselves. This way you can see whether the door is truly plumb.

A quick method:

- Open the door
- Slightly loosen the screws on the bottom hinge
- Adjust the door’s position
- Tighten the screws again

If gaps remain between the door and the shelf, you can fine-tune the adjustment screw that controls the depth.

This prevents crooked or unstable doors.

Thank you for the clarification, I wasn’t fully aware that these hinges are clip hinges.

Adjustment is more difficult with uneven floors or warped carcasses.

That has actually been an issue with my shelf. The floor is a bit uneven, so I will try leveling it with cork pads.

Do you have any recommendations for a specific tool, or is there even a set designed especially for adjusting furniture door hinges like these? So far, I only have standard screwdrivers and a small hex key.

I also read that the door can be readjusted if it sags over time due to use. How much do the hinges tend to shift, and how often would you need to make adjustments?

Thank you in advance!
