ᐅ How can I prevent moisture from getting into IKEA Besta furniture?

zenomauHello everyone,
I have several IKEA Besta furniture pieces at home and the problem that moisture occasionally penetrates the furniture, which naturally can cause the panels to swell and lead to unattractive damage. Since I experience both persistent and seasonal moisture issues in the room, I want to prevent this as effectively as possible.
My specific question is: What proven measures are there to effectively prevent moisture from penetrating IKEA Besta furniture, especially when the furniture is placed directly against exterior walls or in more humid areas?
I am interested in both construction-related solutions (e.g., waterproofing) and maintenance and care tips. Suggestions regarding materials to use during installation or setup are also welcome.
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice and experiences!

Hello zenomau,
First of all, this is a very important topic that is often underestimated. Moisture damage in IKEA Besta furniture usually results from simple causes and can be easily prevented with the right steps.
Here is a brief guide that has proven effective for me and many others:
- Make sure the furniture stands off the floor (using baseboards or spacers). Direct contact with the floor promotes moisture and swelling.
- Protect the back panels of the Besta units with a breathable but water-repellent membrane. This prevents moisture from penetrating through the walls.
- If placing the furniture against exterior walls, install an insulating layer between the wall and the furniture, such as thin rigid foam boards or insulation fleece.
- Use moisture-resistant silicone seals at the joints connecting to the wall to minimize the ingress of condensation water.
- Inside the cabinet, ensure good air circulation and avoid packing contents too tightly. Otherwise, moisture can accumulate.
- Regularly ventilating the room and using dehumidifiers also have a positive effect.
Common mistakes include placing the furniture directly against cold, damp walls or neglecting floor moisture protection.
In summary, I consider the combination of structural waterproofing and smart furnishing essential to sustainably prevent damage. If you like, I can also provide tips on specific materials.
Good luck!

Typical mistakes include placing furniture directly against cold, damp walls or neglecting moisture protection for the floor.I would like to add:
- IKEA Besta furniture is mainly made from MDF boards, which are particularly sensitive to moisture. Therefore, direct contact with moisture is especially problematic.
- It is important not only to seal the furniture superficially but also to ensure that any moisture cannot penetrate inside from the start.
- From a building materials perspective, it makes sense to use vapor-permeable materials so that indoor moisture can escape outward without causing condensation.
- It is also recommended to place the furniture legs on a moisture-resistant base, for example, sealing joints with silicone and using rubber or plastic pads under the feet.
For effective moisture prevention, I advise a combination of structural measures and adjustments to indoor climate control, such as ventilation and possibly dehumidification.
There are hardly any professional furniture sealing options available for Besta, so the only solution is a do-it-yourself approach using sealing films, spacers, and air circulation.
This can significantly reduce the risk of moisture damage.

I’m interested in both construction solutions (e.g., waterproofing) and maintenance tips.I can honestly say I had similar concerns at first. I also tried to seal everything completely back then, but that didn’t really work.
What helped me was looking at the source of moisture in the room itself: Often, it’s not poor waterproofing, but consistently high humidity levels.
Since I started using a small dehumidifier and consistently ventilate after cooking or showering, the Besta furniture has stayed in much better condition.
Sometimes it also helps to give the furniture a bit of “breathing space”: leaving a gap from the wall is not only structurally important but also better for the wood.
So no need to panic, but don’t ignore it either – it’s a combination of construction measures and active indoor climate management.
If you’re interested, I can also share recommendations for care products to protect the surface.

You can best combat moisture on exterior walls by keeping a gap between the wall and the furniture. Even a few centimeters (inches) can make a big difference.
If the room is damp, use a dehumidifier or ventilate properly and regularly.
In my experience, this is usually enough.
