Gerhardje125 Dec 2024 14:23Hello everyone,
I’m planning to assemble my new Ikea Platsa system myself. Since the modules offer a lot of flexibility and the instructions can sometimes be a bit confusing, I’m looking for tips on how to avoid common mistakes when building Platsa. I’m especially interested in advice on preparation, the correct order of assembly steps, and which details or small parts to pay close attention to in order to avoid errors that could become inconvenient or costly later on. Maybe you also have experience with specific tools or tricks that make the assembly easier? I’d also like to know if you would recommend having helpers during assembly, or if it can be managed well alone.
Thanks in advance for your answers!

Hello Gerhardje1,
first of all, here are some basic tips to make assembling Ikea Platsa much safer:
- Preparation is key: Sort all the boxes and thoroughly check all the included screws, dowels, connectors, and of course all the wooden parts against the parts list before starting assembly. Misidentifying parts is a common source of errors.
- Follow a clear sequence: Platsa furniture is usually assembled modularly, which means a specific order—for example, frame first, then back panels, and finally doors/drawers—is an important step. Rule No. 1: carefully follow the instructions step by step from beginning to end. A frequent mistake is fastening components before using the correct screws or connectors.
- Separate small parts and screws carefully: Ikea often uses very similar screw types with only minimal differences. Be careful not to confuse them! Mixing up screw types often leads to rework such as removing screws or compromised stability.
- Pay special attention to angle accuracy, for example when fitting the side panels to the bottom or the upper cabinet. A shifted angle will cause problems later when hanging doors or drawers.
- Tools: A Phillips screwdriver with a good grip, a small hammer for dowels, and possibly a spirit level are essential. For Platsa, a cordless drill with a depth stop can also be useful if handled carefully.
To answer your question about helpers: especially with larger modules that have multiple parts, from my experience it is very helpful to have a second person assist in holding components steady and checking angles while screwing. This significantly reduces errors.
If you like, let me know which exact modules you want to assemble, and I can provide more specific advice on potential challenges.
Good luck!

Misunderstandings during parts identification are a common source of errors.I fully agree and would like to add to this because most mistakes happen exactly here. My “assembly guide” for Platsa looks like this:
- Pre-sort according to the instructions: Prepare small containers or labeled bags for screws by type and size.
- Proceed step-by-step, never partially assemble pieces just to see if they fit. Always lay out all screws completely and compare again if unsure.
- Use a clean, flat surface with good lighting to avoid losing screws or parts.
- Check the bottoms and inner surfaces of all boxes thoroughly to find any overlooked parts or small items.
- When assembling, don’t confuse panels with holes and connectors. The assembly position often follows a logical order and is not necessarily interchangeable.
- Check the depth of pre-drilling or screwing, especially with Platsa, as incorrect pressure can damage the particleboard panels.

Mistakes often happen when you assemble something hastily or think you can “just quickly” finish it. Precision is more important than speed here.
If you want, I can also send you a clear checklist for Platsa – then you can tick everything off step by step.
